Chapter 7 - THE MIDNIGHT SETTLEMENT

-7-

The clock on the wall of the forty-second-floor executive suite clicked precisely to 11:45 PM. Fifteen minutes until the loan default deadline.

Sloane sat behind her mahogany desk, a porcelain cup of black coffee cooling beside her right hand. The office lights were dimmed, casting long, dramatic shadows across the room, while the city lights outside twinkled like a million distant diamonds.

The heavy double doors swung open, and Marcus Vance strode into the room, looking like a man who had just walked out of a war zone and won. He didn't say a word; he simply unzipped his leather briefcase, pulled out the single sheet of legal parchment bearing Vincent Rossi’s violent, slashing signature, and dropped it onto the desk.

Sloane picked it up, her eyes scanning the official cancellation notice. The loan default was officially nullified. The hotel’s hospitality and gaming licenses were fully secured, completely protected from any predatory claims by Ironwood Capital or Vincent Rossi.

She let out a single, measured breath—not a sigh of relief, but the quiet exhale of a general securing her final perimeter wall.

“He signed it?” Maya Lin asked, stepping out from the adjoining conference room, holding a tablet displaying the real-time server logs.

“Without a single argument,” Marcus said, sinking into one of the leather executive chairs and loosening his tie. “When I dropped the federal indictment news on him, he practically threw the pen at me. Vincent Rossi values his freedom a lot more than he values Grant’s two point five million.”

Maya smiled, tapping the screen of her tablet. “Well, the timing couldn't be more poetic. I just received confirmation from Arthur Sterling’s legal team. The emergency board meeting is locked in for 7:00 AM. And the press conference is fully staffed for 8:00 AM downstairs in the main ballroom.”

Sloane stood up from her desk, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window. She looked down at the grand entrance of The Grand Azure below—the very spot where, less than twenty-four hours ago, Grant and Bianca had stood laughing as they stripped her of her name, her office, and her dignity.

“How is Grant holding up?” Sloane asked quietly, not turning around.

Maya checked her phone. “State police picked him up at a cheap motel near the interstate around 9:00 PM, acting on the DA’s sealed indictment warrant. He’s currently sitting in a holding cell at the downtown precinct, screaming for a lawyer who won't answer his calls. Bianca’s lawyer contacted the DA’s office an hour ago to offer full cooperation in exchange for witness protection and immunity from racketeering charges.”

Sloane turned around, a cold, elegant smile gracing her lips. “Of course she did. Rats always abandon a sinking ship first.”

She walked back to the desk, picking up her tailored wool blazer and slipping it over her shoulders. The platinum FOUNDER badge—which Grant had arrogantly tossed into a champagne bucket less than a day ago—was resting securely on her lapel, polished, gleaming, and immovable.

“Get some rest, Maya. Marcus, make sure the legal team has the asset forfeiture paperwork ready for the board meeting at dawn,” Sloane commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority. “Because tomorrow morning, we aren't just reopening a hotel. We’re burying the people who tried to bury us.”
