Chapter 5 - THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S ENVELOPE

-5-

The heavy oak doors of the executive suite swung open a minute later, and Maya Lin hurried back inside, holding a thick, cream-colored envelope bearing the official gold-foiled seal of the State District Attorney’s Office. Her face was noticeably pale, her fingers trembling slightly as she handed the envelope across the mahogany desk to Sloane.

“The security guard took it straight from a Federal Express courier downstairs,” Maya whispered, hovering anxiously. “Sloane... what does the DA want? Could this be related to the SEC investigation into Grant’s shell companies?”

Sloane didn't answer immediately. She picked up a silver letter opener, sliding the blade neatly beneath the red wax seal. The paper inside was heavy, textured linen, bearing the formal letterhead of Chief Prosecutor Evelyn Vance—no relation to Marcus, but a woman notorious in the financial district for prosecuting white-collar criminals with absolute, unyielding ruthlessness.

Sloane unfolded the letter and began to read aloud, her voice eerily calm in the quiet room:

“Dear Ms. Harrison,

Please accept the formal apologies of this office for the delayed intervention regarding the corporate activities of Grant Sterling. Recent whistleblower disclosures—authenticated and submitted by an anonymous financial intelligence firm—have confirmed that Mr. Sterling has been operating an unauthorized secondary ledger utilizing public municipal infrastructure grants allocated for The Grand Azure’s foundation.

As of 4:00 PM today, a federal grand jury has returned a sealed three-count indictment against Grant Sterling for wire fraud, grand larceny, and municipal embezzlement.

Furthermore, because your name remains listed as the primary managing partner on the initial corporate registration documents, our office requires your formal deposition at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning to clear Sloane Holdings of any co-conspiracy liabilities.

Sincerely, Evelyn Vance, Chief Prosecutor.”

Marcus Vance let out a low whistle, leaning back against the mahogany bookcase. “Well, well, well. Looks like someone in Grant’s inner circle finally got tired of covering for him and decided to hand the DA a complete roadmap of his crimes.”

Maya frowned, crossing her arms as she paced across the plush rug. “Who would do that? Grant was an idiot, but he was careful about covering his tracks. Only three people had access to the secondary ledger: Grant, his executive assistant... and...”

Maya stopped dead in her tracks. Her eyes widened as she looked across the desk at Sloane.

“...and Bianca,” Sloane finished softly, a chilling smile touching the corners of her lips.

“Bianca?” Marcus scoffed. “The mistress? Why would she throw Grant under the bus? They were partners in crime!”

“Partners in crime until the money ran out, Marcus,” Sloane replied, setting the DA’s letter down on the desk with a crisp tap of her fingernail. “Bianca thought she was stepping into a billionaire’s penthouse when she helped Grant plot my ouster. But the moment the accounts were frozen today, she realized Grant is legally and financially radioactive. She’s saving her own skin, cutting a deal with the DA, and throwing Grant under the bus to avoid being charged as an accessory.”

Maya shook her head in sheer disbelief. “Honor among thieves is truly dead. So what does this mean for our timeline tonight?”

“It means our leverage just doubled,” Sloane declared, standing up from her executive chair with absolute authority. She picked up the titanium hard drive containing Vincent Rossi’s illegal tax evasion files and tossed it smoothly to Marcus Vance.

“Marcus, get down to downtown Queens. Walk into Vincent Rossi’s private club, hand him this hard drive, and tell him his favorite business partner—Grant Sterling—is currently facing a sealed federal indictment for municipal embezzlement. Tell Vincent that if he wants to avoid being dragged into the federal spotlight alongside Grant, he will cancel the two-point-five-million-dollar loan default by midnight.”

Marcus caught the hard drive, a predatory grin flashing across his face. “Consider it done, Sloane. Vincent Rossi loves money, but he loves staying out of federal prison a lot more.”

“And Maya,” Sloane turned to her CFO, her eyes flashing with diamond-hard resolve. “Call a press conference in the hotel’s main ballroom for 8:00 AM tomorrow morning. Invite every major news outlet, financial reporter, and industry insider in the city.”

Maya blinked, adjusting her glasses. “A press conference? Sloane, what are we announcing? The audit? The divorce?”

“No, Maya,” Sloane whispered, walking back toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows and looking out at the glittering lights of Manhattan. “We aren't just announcing a management change. We’re announcing the complete, unmitigated restructuring of The Grand Azure—entirely free of debt, entirely free of corruption, and officially rebranded under a new corporate entity.”

May you like

She turned back to face them, her expression a masterclass in lethal elegance.

“We are going to show the world that you can build a five-star hotel on a foundation of glass, but if someone tries to shatter it—you simply use the shards to cut their throat.”
