Chapter 3 - THE FROZEN ASSETS

-3-

The stunned silence that had blanketed the lobby of The Grand Azure shattered into a cacophony of frantic murmurs, camera shutters, and stifled gasps. Reporters from the financial desks of major news outlets began aggressively typing on their phones, sensing the smell of blood in the water.

Grant scrambled backward, his immaculate Tom Ford tuxedo suddenly feeling like a straitjacket. He grabbed Bianca by the wrist, pulling her toward the VIP exit, but two of Arthur Sterling’s private security guards—massive men in obsidian suits—instantly stepped into their path, their arms crossed like iron bars.

“Where do you think you’re going, Mr. Sterling?” Arthur Sterling asked smoothly, his cold blue eyes fixed on Grant with the hungry intensity of a shark smelling chum in the water. “We haven't even reviewed the forensic audit findings yet. According to your preliminary disclosures, nearly four million dollars of hotel construction capital was diverted over the last six months into an unlisted secondary account. An account, I might add, that shares a routing number with a private residential mortgage in an exclusive gated community downtown.”

Grant’s throat bobbed. He swallowed hard, sweat beading instantly along his hairline, ruining his carefully styled hair. “That... that’s an accounting error! The general contractor misallocated funds! It has nothing to do with me!”

“An accounting error that conveniently paid off the remaining mortgage on a three-million-dollar luxury estate purchased under a blind trust?” Marcus Vance countered, stepping forward and flipping open a second file folder. He pulled out a certified bank statement and held it up under the lobby’s glaring lights. “Signed by Grant Sterling. And co-signed by... let’s see here... Bianca Vance. No relation to me, thankfully.”

Bianca let out a shrill, hysterical cry, lunging forward with her acrylic nails bared. “You planted those! You bitch, you ruined everything! You planned this!”

Sloane didn't even flinch. She didn't raise her voice. She simply watched the woman who had spent months parading through her social circles unravel into a desperate, screaming mess of designer silk and broken mascara.

“Plan this?” Sloane said, her voice dripping with lethal calm. “Bianca, you were so busy trying to steal my husband and my office that you didn't even bother to check who owned the building’s wireless network infrastructure. Every single text message, every late-night phone call, every digital signature you and Grant exchanged while plotting to push me out—it was all automatically mirrored to my private encrypted server. You didn't sneak into my life. I left the door wide open so you could walk straight into a cage.”

The color drained entirely from Bianca’s face. The reality of the trap closed in around her like the walls of a trash compactor. She looked at Grant, her eyes wide with sudden, burning betrayal.

“You told me she was weak!” Bianca shrieked, shoving Grant backward against a marble pillar. “You told me she had no legal leverage! You said she’d sign the papers and crawl away like a whipped dog!”

Grant stumbled, his expensive cuff links clattering against the stone. He looked at Sloane, his expression twisting from arrogant entitlement into a pathetic, whimpering mask of supplication.

“Sloane... please,” Grant choked out, his voice cracking as he dropped heavily to his knees right there on the red carpet, ignoring the staring crowd, ignoring the flashing cameras. He reached out, his trembling fingers trying to brush against the hem of her trousers. “Sloane, we’ve been together for five years. We built a life! This... this woman meant nothing to me. It was a lapse in judgment, a mid-life crisis, corporate stress! Please, don't do this to us. We can talk about this at home—work it out like adults.”

Sloane looked down at the man kneeling in the dust at her feet. Five years of her life—years of loyalty, sacrifice, and unyielding support—reduced to a pathetic display of cowardice.

She slowly raised her right foot, resting the heel of her designer shoe gently against Grant’s chest, preventing him from touching her.

“At home, Grant?” Sloane asked softly, her eyes flashing with diamond-hard resolve. “The house is registered under Sloane Holdings LLC. The locks were changed at 8:00 AM this morning. Your clothes are currently sitting in three contractor garbage bags on the front curb.”

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Several influencers near the front row muffled their laughs, frantically recording the downward spiral for their followers.

“And as for our marriage,” Sloane continued, pressing her heel down just enough to force Grant to lean back against the marble pillar, “consider it dissolved. My divorce lawyers filed the papers electronically the moment I walked through those front doors. You’re going to leave this hotel with exactly what you brought into it five years ago: absolutely nothing.”

Arthur Sterling stepped forward, raising his hand to signal the security guards.

“Escort these two trespassers off the premises,” Arthur commanded coldly. “And make sure the media gets a clear, unobstructed shot of their faces on their way out. The Grand Azure does not tolerate thieves.”

The two massive security guards hauled Grant up by his tuxedo lapels as if he weighed nothing. Grant didn't fight back; his legs had turned to jelly, his eyes glazed over with shock as he was dragged backward down the red carpet. Bianca followed close behind, sobbing hysterically, shielding her face with her designer handbag as the cameras flashed blindingly in her direction.

As the glass doors swung shut behind the disgraced pair, the lobby descended into an entirely different kind of quiet—a quiet born of absolute, unquestioned power.

Arthur Sterling turned to Sloane, offering a warm, approving smile. “Magnificent execution, my dear. The board of directors will officially ratify your complete operational control within the hour. But tell me... what’s your next move?”

May you like

Sloane turned her gaze toward the forty-second-floor executive suite visible through the high glass atrium—the office that had been stolen from her, and the office that was now rightfully hers once more.

“My next move?” Sloane murmured, a dangerous, thrilling smile touching the corners of her lips. “We open the hotel. But first... we audit every single department Grant touched. Because I want to know every rat that helped him chew through my foundation.”
