PART 4 — THE MAN IN THE PARKING GARAGE

The security monitor flickered.

Then froze on a single frame.

Three black SUVs.

Six armed men.

Professional formation.

Military posture.

No hesitation.

No wasted movement.

These weren't kidnappers looking for a quick payday.

These were people with a mission.

And that mission was Amelia.

Inside the hospital's security center, Detective Rose stared at the screen.

Then immediately grabbed her radio.

"Lock down every floor."

The response came instantly.

"Confirmed."

"Seal all exits."

"Confirmed."

"No one leaves without identification."

"Confirmed."

Rose turned toward Amelia.

For the first time since the investigation began...

The detective looked genuinely worried.

"They found you."

Amelia sat upright in her hospital bed.

Pain shot through her body.

But she ignored it.

Because something about the men downstairs felt wrong.

Very wrong.

"Who are they?"

Rose didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she zoomed in on the image.

One face became visible.

Then another.

Then a third.

Her expression darkened.

"Oh no."

Amelia's pulse accelerated.

"What?"

Rose slowly exhaled.

"They're not working for Eleanor."

Silence.

Then:

"They're working for Daniel Hale."

The room froze.

Amelia stared.

"My father?"

Rose nodded.

"Apparently."

Nothing made sense.

Daniel Hale had spent twenty-seven years searching for his daughter.

Why would he send armed men after her?

Why not simply walk through the front door?

Why not call?

Why not explain?

Unless...

Something else was happening.

Something much bigger.

Meanwhile, four floors below...

The elevators opened.

The armed men stepped out.

Quietly.

Methodically.

One carried a tablet displaying Amelia's photograph.

Another held hospital floor plans.

A third monitored security cameras.

These people were prepared.

Extremely prepared.

Too prepared.

The leader of the group stopped walking.

Then pressed a finger against an earpiece.

"Target confirmed."

A voice answered.

Cold.

Calm.

Powerful.

"Bring her to me."

The leader nodded.

"Understood."

Then the line disconnected.

What nobody in the hospital realized was that the voice didn't belong to Daniel Hale.

Not at all.

It belonged to someone far more dangerous.

Someone nobody knew existed.

Back at Eleanor's penthouse, another confrontation was unfolding.

Eleanor sat motionless.

The phone still pressed against her ear.

Daniel Hale's voice echoed through the silence.

"You should have told her."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"She wasn't safe."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Safe?"

The word sounded almost painful.

"You stole my daughter."

Eleanor's hands trembled.

For years she had justified her actions.

Protected them.

Defended them.

But now...

The excuses sounded hollow.

Even to her.

"You don't understand."

The moment she said it, she regretted it.

Because Daniel exploded.

Twenty-seven years of grief erupted at once.

"I buried an empty coffin."

The words shattered the room.

"I watched Margaret die believing our child was gone."

Eleanor flinched.

Because that part was true.

Painfully true.

Margaret Hale never recovered.

Not after losing Amelia.

Not after the lies.

Not after the years of searching.

Eventually illness took her.

And she died believing her daughter was dead.

A lie Eleanor created.

A lie that destroyed an entire family.

Daniel's voice became quieter.

More dangerous.

"Tell me where she is."

Eleanor looked toward the city skyline.

Then whispered:

"They already found her."

Silence.

"What do you mean?"

Eleanor's blood ran cold.

Because she suddenly realized something.

The armed men.

The hospital.

The timing.

The attacks.

The threats.

Daniel wasn't behind any of it.

Someone else was.

And whoever they were...

They had waited until the truth emerged.

Until Amelia learned who she was.

Until the inheritance became public.

Then they moved.

Back at the hospital, chaos erupted.

An alarm sounded.

Security cameras went dark.

Emergency lights activated.

The entire building suddenly lost power.

"Impossible."

Rose stared at the black monitors.

Every screen.

Every feed.

Every camera.

Gone.

Someone had hacked the hospital.

Patients screamed.

Doctors rushed through dark hallways.

Nurses activated emergency procedures.

And somewhere inside the confusion...

The armed men continued moving.

Floor by floor.

Hall by hall.

Closer.

Closer.

Closer.

Amelia's room sat in darkness.

Only emergency lights illuminated the walls.

Julian stood beside her bed.

Protective.

Terrified.

Determined.

Then footsteps appeared outside.

Heavy footsteps.

Many of them.

Rose drew her weapon.

The officers outside did the same.

Every person prepared for confrontation.

The door handle slowly turned.

Click.

Then the door swung open.

Everyone raised their weapons.

Only to freeze.

Because the person standing there wasn't armed.

Wasn't dangerous.

Wasn't a threat.

It was an old man.

Seventy years old.

Gray hair.

Weathered face.

Tired eyes.

And Amelia immediately recognized him.

Not from real life.

From photographs.

From old records.

From decades of investigation.

Daniel Hale.

Her father.

For several seconds nobody moved.

The room became completely silent.

Then Amelia whispered:

"Dad?"

The old man's eyes filled with tears.

Real tears.

The kind impossible to fake.

He nodded.

For twenty-seven years he imagined this moment.

Thousands of times.

Millions perhaps.

Yet now that it had finally arrived...

Words failed him.

Then suddenly gunfire echoed somewhere down the hallway.

Everyone jumped.

Rose immediately turned.

"What was that?"

An officer answered through the radio.

Panic filled his voice.

"We have casualties."

Silence.

"Who?"

The answer chilled everyone.

"They aren't after Amelia."

Rose frowned.

"What?"

The officer swallowed.

Then spoke.

"They're after Daniel."

The room froze.

Because at that exact moment...

Daniel Hale looked terrified.

Truly terrified.

And for the first time since arriving...

He spoke a name.

A name nobody recognized.

A name that immediately drained all color from Eleanor's face when investigators later repeated it.

"The Consortium found me."

Silence.

"What Consortium?"

Amelia asked.

Daniel looked at her.

Then whispered the words that changed everything.

Again.

"The people who ordered your mother's death."

The room froze.

Because according to every investigation...

Margaret died from illness.

Natural causes.

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"No."

Then he revealed the truth.

Margaret Hale had been murdered.

And the people responsible had finally returned to finish what they started twenty-seven years ago.

Unfortunately...

They weren't coming for Daniel anymore.

May you like

They were coming for Amelia.
