PART 2 — THE SECRET IN THE MATERNITY FILE

The ambulance lights painted streaks of red and blue across the city streets.

Inside, Amelia lay motionless while paramedics monitored both her and the baby.

Every bump in the road sent pain through her body.

But despite the pain...

She smiled.

Because for the first time in years, Chloe had finally made a mistake she couldn't talk her way out of.

A mistake that had been recorded.

A mistake witnessed.

A mistake impossible to deny.

Still...

The arrest wasn't what mattered most.

Not even close.

Because Detective Rose wasn't investigating Chloe anymore.

She was investigating Eleanor Whitmore.

And Eleanor had no idea.

Back at the mansion, police officers continued searching the property.

The grand estate no longer looked like a symbol of wealth.

It looked like a crime scene.

Evidence technicians photographed everything.

Officers collected phones.

Computers.

Documents.

Security footage.

Every room became part of the investigation.

And standing alone in the middle of it all...

Eleanor looked frightened.

Truly frightened.

Perhaps for the first time in her life.

She watched officers carrying boxes out of her study.

Then her attorney arrived.

Charles Benton.

The most expensive lawyer money could buy.

The moment he entered, Eleanor grabbed his arm.

"You need to stop this."

Charles looked unusually serious.

"What exactly am I stopping?"

"The police."

"The investigation."

"The search."

Charles hesitated.

Then spoke carefully.

"Eleanor..."

"What?"

"How much does Detective Rose know?"

The question sent a chill down her spine.

Because she didn't know.

And that uncertainty terrified her.

Meanwhile, Amelia arrived at Saint Gabriel Medical Center.

Doctors immediately rushed her into emergency evaluation.

Ultrasounds.

Blood tests.

Monitoring.

The next hour felt endless.

Finally, a physician entered the room.

Amelia immediately sat upright.

"The baby?"

The doctor smiled gently.

"The baby is alive."

Tears instantly filled Amelia's eyes.

For several moments she couldn't speak.

Relief overwhelmed her.

Pure relief.

Then the doctor added something unexpected.

Something strange.

Something that immediately caught her attention.

"There is something else."

Amelia frowned.

"What?"

The doctor glanced toward the hallway.

Almost as if checking whether anyone else was listening.

Then he closed the door.

"I received a call tonight."

Amelia froze.

"A call?"

The doctor nodded.

"From someone claiming to represent the Whitmore family."

Her blood ran cold.

Immediately.

"What did they want?"

The doctor's expression darkened.

"They offered a large amount of money."

Silence.

Then:

"To alter your medical records."

The room became completely silent.

Amelia stared.

Unable to believe what she was hearing.

"Alter them how?"

The doctor swallowed.

Then answered.

"They wanted your baby's paternity changed."

The words hit like a truck.

For several seconds, Amelia forgot how to breathe.

Because there was only one reason someone would do that.

One reason.

And it wasn't good.

"Who called?"

She demanded.

The doctor shook his head.

"The number was blocked."

Then he handed her a piece of paper.

A note he'd written during the conversation.

One sentence stood out.

Make sure the child is not legally recognized as a Whitmore.

Amelia felt ice spread through her chest.

Because now everything made sense.

The attacks.

The threats.

The hatred.

The obsession.

None of it was about her.

It was about the baby.

Hours later, Detective Rose arrived at the hospital.

The moment she entered, Amelia handed over the note.

Rose read it once.

Then twice.

Then a third time.

Her expression became very serious.

"This changes everything."

Amelia nodded.

"Why would they care so much?"

Rose remained silent for several moments.

Then she pulled a file from her briefcase.

A thick file.

One Amelia had never seen before.

"Eleanor has a secret."

Amelia frowned.

"What kind of secret?"

Rose placed the file on the bed.

Then opened it.

Inside were decades-old photographs.

Birth certificates.

Hospital records.

Adoption documents.

Financial statements.

And one name that appeared over and over again.

Margaret Hale.

Amelia stared.

"Who is she?"

Rose looked directly into her eyes.

Then spoke quietly.

"Your mother."

The room froze.

"What?"

Amelia laughed nervously.

"My mother died when I was twelve."

Rose slowly shook her head.

"No."

Silence.

Pure silence.

Then:

"That's what Eleanor wanted you to believe."

The world seemed to tilt.

Amelia stared at her.

Certain she had misunderstood.

Certain this had to be wrong.

But Rose's expression never changed.

Twenty-seven years earlier...

Margaret Hale worked as a private nurse for the Whitmore family.

She cared for Eleanor during a difficult pregnancy.

She lived in the estate.

She became trusted.

Perhaps too trusted.

Because according to the investigation...

Margaret discovered something she wasn't supposed to know.

And three weeks later...

She vanished.

Officially, she moved overseas.

Unofficially...

Nobody ever saw her again.

Amelia's hands began shaking.

"No."

Rose nodded sadly.

"There's more."

Then she slid a photograph across the bed.

An old photograph.

Faded.

Yellowed with age.

But still clear enough to recognize.

A young Margaret stood holding a newborn baby.

Beside her stood Eleanor Whitmore.

The two women looked happy.

Close.

Almost like family.

Then Amelia noticed something.

The baby.

The baby wasn't Eleanor's child.

The baby was Margaret's.

Because written on the back of the photograph was a date.

And beneath the date...

A name.

Amelia.

The room went silent.

Completely silent.

Because suddenly everything changed.

Again.

Eleanor hadn't simply disliked Amelia.

She hadn't simply favored Chloe.

She hadn't simply been cruel.

The truth was far worse.

Much worse.

Eleanor had known exactly who Amelia was from the very beginning.

And somehow...

Someway...

Amelia's existence threatened a secret buried for nearly three decades.

A secret powerful enough to inspire attempted murder.

Bribery.

Fraud.

And perhaps something even darker.

Then Detective Rose delivered the final revelation.

The revelation that made Amelia's blood run cold.

"We found Eleanor's private safe."

Amelia looked up.

"What was inside?"

Rose slowly exhaled.

Then answered.

"A DNA report."

Silence.

"And according to that report..."

Rose's voice became quieter.

"Eleanor Whitmore isn't your enemy."

A pause.

Then:

"She's your grandmother."

The room froze.

Amelia stared.

Unable to move.

Unable to speak.

Unable to think.

Because if Eleanor was her grandmother...

Then only one question remained.

The most terrifying question of all.

Who was her real father?

And why had someone spent twenty-seven years trying to hide the answer?

Before Rose could continue, her phone suddenly rang.

She answered.

Listened.

Then her face lost all color.

"What happened?" Amelia asked.

Rose slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time since the investigation began...

The detective looked genuinely alarmed.

"They found Chloe's apartment."

Silence.

"And?"

Rose swallowed hard.

Then said:

"Someone got there first."

Amelia's stomach dropped.

Because according to the officers at the scene...

Chloe Sinclair wasn't alone.

She had been talking to someone.

Someone powerful.

Someone connected to Eleanor.

Someone who had just disappeared hours before the arrest.

And inside Chloe's apartment...

Police discovered a locked box containing photographs.

Hundreds of photographs.

All of Amelia.

Taken over years.

Hidden surveillance.

Secret observations.

And taped beneath the lid was a note written in Eleanor's handwriting.

A note containing five chilling words:

May you like

She must never learn who she is.
