I stepped out of the secret service panel into the west hall pylon, my heavy winter boots leaving sharp, wet tracking metrics against the polished marble floorboards as I walked into the light of the living room. The sound of the hidden panel locking behind my back caused Patricia’s head to snap around with a violent force, her face draining of color so rapidly it looked like a sheet of industrial bone-bleach.
Elena froze mid-gesture, the braided riding whip still raised above Daniela’s shoulder, her knuckles turning a bloodless white against the leather handle as she recognized the unyielding finality burning in my gray eyes.
