Chapter 6 - Morning on the Mountain-6

The sun rose over the Rocky Mountains in a brilliant explosion of amber, gold, and violet, casting warm light across the frost-kissed windows of my kitchen. I stood by the marble island, wrapped in my favorite cashmere robe, sipping a steaming cup of freshly brewed dark roast coffee.

Outside, the neighborhood was waking up. Birds chirped in the pine trees, and the distant hum of morning traffic on the highway sounded peaceful and orderly.

My phone buzzed against the marble countertop at exactly 7:55 AM.

It was Marcus.

"Morning, Clara. Are you sitting down?" Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker, brimming with barely contained adrenaline.

"I'm standing in my kitchen, Marcus. Give me the update," I replied calmly.

"Sarah filed the emergency injunction with District Judge Miller twenty minutes ago. The judge took one look at the audio transcript and the forensic forgery analysis on those quitclaim deeds and signed the freeze order immediately. All personal and corporate accounts tied to Julian Barrett are officially locked tight."

I took a slow sip of my coffee. "And the international wire accounts?"

"Federal banking investigators in Zurich executed the emergency asset seizure warrant at 4:00 AM Swiss time. Victoria Vance’s boutique holding firm has been cut off from the global banking network. Every single dollar they laundered out of your trust has been frozen in escrow pending federal forfeiture hearings."

A deep, satisfying sense of peace settled into my chest. "And Julian?"

"Well," Marcus chuckled darkly, "Julian is currently sitting in the upscale glass-walled dining room of the Miami Grand Hotel, enjoying a gourmet breakfast with his corporate investors. His presentation was supposed to feature a live demonstration of his new corporate acquisition funded by your stolen capital."

"Let me guess," I smiled. "When he clicked his presentation clicker to show the account balances..."

"His screen flashed red with a federal asset forfeiture notice, his corporate credit card was declined while trying to pay the valet, and two federal marshals are walking across the hotel dining room to slap the bracelets on him as we speak."

"Oh, I wish I could see the look on his face," I breathed, gazing out the kitchen window at the majestic mountain peaks.

"Don't worry, Clara. My contacts in Miami are securing CCTV footage of the entire incident. It'll be delivered to our office by noon," Marcus assured me. "Now, what’s your next move? Do you want to meet at the courthouse for the property deed reversion hearing this afternoon?"

"No," I said firmly. "I want you to file the formal notice of tenancy termination and property repossession for this address. Because legally, since those quitclaim deeds were fraudulent and void ab initio, this house has never stopped being mine."

"Consider it done. I'll have the sheriff's department serve Victoria's corporate office in Denver with an eviction notice for her personal belongings stored in the guest suite by tomorrow morning."

May you like

"Thank you, Marcus. I'll see you at your office this afternoon."

I hung up the phone, set my coffee cup down on the counter, and walked over to the front hallway. I picked up my coat, stepped out onto the front porch, and breathed in the crisp mountain air. The trap had sprung. And Julian was about to discover what happens when you underestimate a woman who has nothing left to lose.
