Chapter 7 - The Family Meeting

-7-
While Special Agent Vance mobilized his tactical and investigative teams to execute the federal asset freeze, across town in the opulent dining room of the Calloway family estate, a very different kind of meeting was taking place.
Ryan Calloway sat at the head of the long mahogany dining table, his face pale and drawn, dark circles shadowing his eyes from a sleepless night. Around him sat his father, Arthur Calloway, and his mother, Eleanor, whose aristocratic composure was beginning to fracture under the weight of mounting panic.
“What do you mean, the primary server logs are missing?” Arthur slammed his coffee cup down onto the table, the porcelain cracking against the wood. “Ryan, you assured me that the backend security was impenetrable!”
“It was impenetrable, Dad!” Ryan snapped back, his voice cracking with uncharacteristic hysteria. “Unless someone had a master administrative key—a hardware token that we were supposed to have revoked when Claire left her position two years ago!”
Eleanor Calloway gasped, her hand flying to her chest. “Claire? That insignificant little nobody? She wouldn't know the first thing about backend security architecture! She was just an auditor before she gave it all up to manage our household!”
“She wasn't just an auditor, Mom!” Ryan shouted, standing up so fast his chair tipped over backward and crashed onto the marble floor. “Before she married me, she was the lead systems auditor for the entire enterprise! She built the very security framework we’ve been using to mask our debt transfers!”
The dining room fell into a terrifying, dead silence.
The realization hit Arthur Calloway like a physical blow. All their condescension, all their calculated efforts to make me feel small, invisible, and dependent—it had all backfired in the most catastrophic way imaginable. They had treated the keeper of the keys like an unpaid servant, forgetting that the servant held the master passcode to the entire kingdom.
“We need to liquidate the offshore accounts immediately,” Arthur muttered, his voice shaking as he reached for his phone. “Move everything to the secondary holdings in Singapore before—”
Before Arthur could finish his sentence, the heavy oak front doors of the estate echoed with a loud, rhythmic pounding.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
It wasn't polite knocking. It was the heavy, authoritative rap of federal law enforcement.
Before anyone could move toward the foyer, the grand front doors swung open with a resounding crash. Special Agent Vance, flanked by four armed federal marshals in tactical gear, strode into the opulent foyer, their heavy boots echoing across the marble floor like the footsteps of an inescapable fate.
“Arthur Calloway? Ryan Calloway?” Vance’s voice cut through the grand hallway with chilling authority. “You are both under federal investigation for securities fraud, wire fraud, and criminal identity forgery. Step away from the table and place your hands where we can see them.”
Eleanor shrieked, collapsing backward into her chair as the federal marshals moved swiftly across the dining room, their handcuffs gleaming coldly under the crystal chandelier.
Ryan stood frozen at the head of the table, his face completely drained of color. As the cold steel cuffs clicked around his wrists, his mind finally flashed back to twelve hours earlier—to 4:30 a.m., when he had looked at me in our kitchen, holding our newborn son, and casually dropped the word divorce like it was nothing.

He had thought he was discarding me.
He was only just discovering what happens when you underestimate a woman who knows where all the bodies are buried.
