Chapter 12 - The Final Ledger

-12-

I watched Eleanor Calloway leave my office a few minutes later. She walked out with a quiet, humbled dignity that she should have learned decades ago. I didn't feel a surge of triumph, nor did I feel pity. I felt closure—absolute, final, and complete.

The past was truly dead, buried beneath the weight of its own deception.

Maya stepped back into the office a moment later, holding a stack of freshly printed audit reports. “Was that... was that who I think it was?” she asked softly.

“That was a ghost from a previous life, Maya,” I replied, standing up and walking over to the window where the city lights were just beginning to flicker on against the evening sky. “And ghosts don't belong in our ledger.”

Maya smiled, placing the reports on my desk. “Well, speaking of ledgers, the Q3 compliance review for the new tech portfolio is complete. Every single account checks out. No hidden liabilities, no shell companies, no anomalies.”

“Good,” I said. “Integrity isn't just a corporate buzzword, Maya. It’s the only foundation worth building on.”

Later that evening, after Maya had locked up and gone home, I packed my briefcase, scooped Leo up into my arms, and walked down to the private underground parking garage.

The air was crisp and cool, carrying the unmistakable scent of approaching autumn. I strapped Leo safely into his car seat in the back of my car, watching him let out a soft, contented yawn as his heavy eyelids drifted shut.

As I slid into the driver’s seat and turned the ignition, my gaze lingered for a moment on the rearview mirror. I didn't see the tired, trapped woman who had stood in a freezing kitchen at 4:30 a.m. months ago, holding her breath while a husband casually dismantled her life.

Instead, I saw a woman who knew her worth, owned her story, and held the keys to her own destiny.

I shifted the car into drive, pulled smoothly out of the parking structure, and merged into the flowing streams of city traffic.

The night was ours.
