Chapter 5 - The Left-Hand Prosthetic-5

The drive out of the downtown financial district was a silent, tense transition. Special Agent Harris drove the massive black FBI tactical SUV herself, our convoy of three security vehicles tearing through the rain-swept industrial corridors of the shipping canal, heading straight toward the secure medical pavilion at the base hospital where my mother was currently undergoing a comprehensive diagnostic toxicity review.
I sat in the middle row, my arm wrapped tightly around Harper’s shoulders, her head resting flat against my chest as she finally fell into a deep, exhausted sleep, her small fingers still clutching the golden butterscotch wrapper Mrs. Adele had given her at the neighborhood park last week.
"Claire," Agent Harris said, her eyes tracking the rearview mirror as she pushed the high-performance vehicle through a flooded intersection near the locks. "We have an issue regarding the secondary administrative token Caleb was running. The forensic IT unit downtown just discovered that the encryption block wasn't written by Caleb or Evelyn Vance. The source architecture routes back to a high-density server core hidden inside the private residence of your own chief financial officer—Marcus Vance."
My breath caught in my throat, the copper taste of adrenaline returning to my mouth with a violent force. Marcus Vance. He wasn't just my CFO; he was Evelyn's older brother, the man who had sat right next to me in every single corporate balancing session for five years, the man who had delivered the eulogy at my father’s funeral.
"The loop was perfect, Claire," Harris explained, her voice dropping into a low, dangerous register over the roar of the wind outside. "Marcus has a multi-million-dollar gambling liability with sports books controlled by syndicates in Eastern Europe. He needed a way to extract eighty-five million dollars from the Vanguard Group’s infrastructure fund without triggering an internal regulatory audit. He brought Caleb into the pipeline three years ago, using his real estate firm as the perfect domestic filter to launder the public conservation grants through the Cyprus accounts."
She held up a digital printout sheet, its surface displaying a real-time geographical tracking map of the city’s underground shipping canal structures.
"And the black briefcase Caleb brought into the courtroom today... the data drive he was trying to protect... it didn't just contain the money laundering invoices, Claire. It contained the digital monitoring logs of the trust fund's outbound wires to Switzerland—the accounts your father established ten years ago to hide your mother, Eleanor Vance, from the very same political machine."

A sudden, blinding terror locked my joints. My mother. She hadn't been living in a quiet retirement cottage in Maine because of a degenerative illness. My father had staged her clinical death ten years ago to protect her from Marcus Vance’s syndicate after she discovered the initial blueprints of the pipeline during her tenure at the State Treasury Department.
"Marcus knows where she is, Claire," Agent Harris whispered, her jaw clenching tightly as she swerved the vehicle into the hospital parking structure gates. "The moment the courtroom video went live on the public network, his handlers in Geneva locked down her residential block. They’ve given us exactly forty-five minutes to transmit the trust's master cryptographic keys... or they’ll execute the clean-up script against her tonight."
