Chapter 5 - THE LEGAL STRIKE

-5

At 1:00 PM, I parked my sedan in the subterranean garage of the Gray & Sterling Law Firm in downtown Hartford. My attorney, Arthur Sterling—a legendary family law litigator known throughout the state as a shark in an expensive Brioni suit—had cleared his Saturday afternoon schedule the moment I texted him the words “State evidentiary chain of custody established. Financial fraud confirmed.”

Arthur’s office occupied the entire forty-second floor of the glass-and-steel monolith overlooking the river. As I walked into his sunlit conference room carrying a heavy leather briefcase, Arthur stood up from his mahogany desk, his silver hair neatly combed, his eyes sharp behind rimless glasses.

"Daniel," Arthur said, shaking my hand with a grip like a hydraulic vice. "Your text message practically set my phone on fire. Tell me you didn't break any state surveillance laws pulling this data together, or my job defending you becomes a lot harder."

"Everything was captured via hardwired PoE cameras governed by my state-certified home security network and automatically mirrored to an immutable AG evidentiary partition," I said, unzipping the briefcase and laying the encrypted Blu-ray disc and a thick printed dossier across the conference table. "Chain of custody is airtight. Not a single byte of metadata has been altered or manipulated."

Arthur sat down, putting on his reading glasses, and began flipping through the printed financial ledgers, the text message exports, and the pediatrician's official medical report detailing Lily’s muscular strain and dehydration.

As he read, the veteran lawyer’s expression evolved from mild professional curiosity to absolute, jaw-dropping disbelief. He stopped at the page containing the still frames of Diane shoving Noah into Lily's arms, followed by the image of Claire and Marcus Vale smiling into the camera while plotting to drain our accounts.

"Good God," Arthur whispered, taking off his glasses and rubbing the bridge of his nose. "This isn't just an ugly divorce, Daniel. This is a masterclass in premeditated financial extortion and child endangerment. If we drop this packet into Family Court alongside a criminal referral for embezzlement and wire fraud, Claire won't just lose custody—she'll be facing felony prison time."

"That's the goal," I said calmly, taking a seat opposite him. "I don't want a messy, dragged-out legal battle that exposes Lily and Noah to months of emotional shrapnel. I want an emergency ex-parte custody injunction filed first thing Monday morning, granting me sole temporary physical and legal custody based on clear and convincing evidence of maternal endangerment. Simultaneously, I want a comprehensive asset freeze slapped on Claire's personal accounts, Marcus Vale's corporate portfolios, and Vanguard Holdings LLC."

Arthur leaned back in his leather chair, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his weathered face. "And what about Claire's mother? Diane aided and abetted the abandonment of a minor."

"Diane gets served with a formal subpoena to depose her under oath regarding her role in leaving a seven-year-old child to care for an infant while she facilitated an adulterous rendezvous," I replied. "If she lies under oath, she commits perjury. If she tells the truth, she implicates Claire and Marcus in a conspiracy."

Arthur reached across the table, tapping his finger against the dossier. "You cold-blooded bastard, Daniel. If I didn't like you so much, I'd be terrified of you."

May you like

"You're my lawyer, Arthur," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "You're supposed to like how terrifying I am to my enemies."

"Consider the motion drafted," Arthur said, his eyes gleaming with litigious excitement. "Be at the courthouse at 8:00 AM sharp on Monday. We're going to dismantle their entire world before they even realize the building is collapsing."
