Chapter 8 - THE RETURN TO THE GATES

The dinner party at the Sterling estate was a masterclass in quiet elegance. The formal dining room was bathed in the warm, amber glow of crystal wall sconces, and the scent of roasted rosemary chicken and fine wine filled the air.
Margaret Sterling laughed genuinely as Marcus—the head of estate security—recounted a particularly humorous anecdote about an overzealous rookie guard trying to interrogate a stray raccoon near the North Perimeter gate.
Emily sat across from Daniel, the easy warmth between them a stark contrast to the formal, stiff dinners she had served as a domestic worker just weeks prior.
"More wine, Emily?" Margaret offered, holding up the crystal bottle with a graceful smile.
"I'm quite well, thank you, Mrs. Sterling," Emily replied, her eyes catching Daniel’s across the candlelight.
Suddenly, the ambient hum of the dining room's smart-home automation system stuttered. The soft classical music playing over the integrated speakers cut out with a sharp, electronic hiss.
The recessed overhead lights flickered once, twice, and then plunged the entire room into absolute darkness.
At the head of the table, Margaret froze.
Across the room, Marcus was already on his feet, his hand instinctively sliding inside his blazer toward his concealed sidearm. "Perimeter breach," Marcus barked, his voice dropping into tactical readiness. "The main breaker didn't trip—the smart-grid local node just experienced a hard override."
Daniel didn't panic. He stood up slowly, his tall frame cutting a resolute shadow against the moonlight streaming through the bay windows. He reached out, placing his hand reassuringly over Emily’s shoulder.
"Marcus, secure my mother in the panic room," Daniel ordered crisply. "Emily, come with me to the security terminal in the study. Let's see who's trying to crash our dinner party."
As they hurried down the dimly lit hallway toward the private family library, Emily’s analytical mind raced through the digital architecture of the house.
"The override didn't come from an external IP address," Emily whispered, her breath fogging slightly in the sudden chill of the unheated hallway. "It originated from the physical access port inside the fourth-floor legacy archive room."
Daniel stopped dead in his tracks, turning to look at her with sudden, razor-sharp realization. "The old legacy mainframe. The one holding the pre-merged network backups."
"Someone is trying to access the master security keys locally," Emily said, her stormy gray eyes flashing with determination. "And based on the access log packet size... they're downloading the entire estate surveillance override."

Daniel reached out, pulling a heavy-duty tactical flashlight from the wall-mounted emergency kit, clicking it on to pierce the gloom of the stairwell.
"Stay behind me, Emily," Daniel instructed, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "We're going hunting."
