Chapter 10 - THE MORNING AFTER THE STORM

-12
The federal marshals took custody of Arthur and Vanessa before midnight, carting them away in unmarked vans through the pouring rain.
By sunrise, the estate had returned to a state of absolute, pristine tranquility. The temporary security breach had been patched, the local firewall upgraded to military-grade standards, and the shadow of the conspiracy had been permanently erased from the Sterling legacy.
In the private family library, the morning sun poured through the massive leaded glass windows, warming the Persian rugs and casting a golden glow across the mahogany desk.
Emily sat in her usual armchair, reviewing the final consolidated balance sheets of Sterling Global.
The heavy oak door opened softly, and Margaret Sterling stepped into the room, carrying a silver tray with a fresh pot of Earl Grey tea and two porcelain cups. The matriarch set the tray down on the table, pouring a cup for Emily before seating herself opposite her.
"Well," Margaret began, a warm, approving smile gracing her lips. "I must confess, I never imagined that employing a housekeeper would result in dismantling a multi-million-dollar criminal syndicate and securing my family's corporate sovereignty for the next generation."
Emily chuckled softly, taking a sip of the warm tea. "It certainly wasn't what I outlined in my initial resume cover letter, Mrs. Sterling."
"Margaret, please," the matriarch corrected gently, leaning back in her chair. "At this point, calling me 'Mrs. Sterling' feels entirely too formal for someone who is practically running the entire western hemisphere of our operations."
Before Emily could respond, Daniel walked into the library. He had already changed into a sharp charcoal suit, his tie neatly knotted, his expression relaxed and entirely at peace. He walked over behind Emily’s chair, resting his hands lightly on the backrest, his eyes locking onto hers with a warm, unspoken devotion.
"The federal prosecutors just filed the final, consolidated indictments against Arthur and Vanessa," Daniel reported, his voice smooth and steady. "They'll be facing a mandatory minimum of twenty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary with no possibility of parole."
Margaret nodded slowly, taking a sip of her tea. "Good. The garbage has finally been taken out."
She stood up gracefully, leaning on her ebony cane, and looked between Daniel and Emily with a knowing twinkle in her eye. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a morning garden club meeting to attend. I trust the two of you can manage the executive suite without my direct supervision."
As the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind Margaret, the library settled into a quiet, comfortable intimacy.
Daniel walked around the desk, stopping just inches from Emily. He reached down, taking her hand in his, his fingers intertwining with hers.
"You know," Daniel murmured, his voice dropping into that low, magnetic register that sent a shiver straight down her spine, "we never did finish celebrating your promotion."
Emily looked up at him, a playful, challenging spark dancing in her stormy gray eyes. "And just how do you propose we celebrate, Mr. Sterling?"
Daniel smiled—a slow, breathtaking curve of his lips that banished every shadow of the past.
May you like
"Dinner," Daniel said softly. "Outside the estate. No security feeds, no corporate audits, and no spreadsheets."
Emily’s fingers tightened around his, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "It's a date."
