Chapter 7 - THE SUBTERRANEAN VAULT

The heavy steel side door of the water plant was ajar, held open by a heavy rubber wedge jammed into the bottom hinge. A faint, rhythmic hum—the unmistakable thrum of industrial server racks and cooling fans—vibrated faintly through the cold concrete foundation beneath my boots.
I slipped through the threshold into the gloom of the interior.
The air inside smelled of stale dust, ozone, and copper. A single overhead fluorescent light flickered intermittently at the end of a long, concrete corridor, casting long, fractured shadows across the peeling walls.
I kept my footsteps light, hugging the edge of the corridor until I reached a heavy steel bulkhead door marked with a faded, stenciled sign: LEVEL 2 - PUMP STATION / SECURE STORAGE.
The door was unlocked. I pushed it open an inch and peered inside.
It wasn't a pump station. It was a high-tech subterranean server room and communications bunker. Rows of sleek, black server racks lined the walls, their green and amber LED lights blinking in a frantic, continuous cascade. In the center of the room stood a large mahogany desk cluttered with computer monitors, empty coffee cups, and a heavy satellite uplink transceiver.
Standing beside the desk, arguing in hushed, furious whispers, were two men.
One of them was Mark.
My brother looked like he had aged ten years since Thanksgiving dinner. His expensive suit jacket was rumpled, his tie was loosened, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. Standing across from him was a tall, silver-haired man in a heavy tactical vest—a man I recognized from Vance Global’s corporate security directory as Marcus Thorne, head of international operations and the chief architect of Project Vanguard.
“I told you, Mark, your sister is a liability,” Thorne was saying, his voice cold and sharp as a razor blade. “If she downloaded the Level 5 archive before you locked the system, she has the entire operational blueprint. If the Department of Justice gets those files, we aren't just looking at prison time—we’re looking at treason charges.”
“I didn't think she had it in her!” Mark shot back, his voice cracking with panic as he paced back and forth across the concrete floor. “She’s just a graphic designer and compliance clerk! She spent six years raising a kid alone in a two-bedroom apartment! How was I supposed to know she was running forensic audits on our offshore accounts behind our backs?”

“Because you and your father were too arrogant to realize that the people you treat like dirt are the ones watching you the closest,” a voice echoed from the shadows near the back of the room.
Mark and Thorne both spun around instantly, their eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror as I stepped out from behind a towering server rack, my hand resting casually inside my coat pocket over the heavy steel tire iron.
