Chapter 4 - THE GHOST OF PROJECT VANGUARD

-4-

The document title glowing on my laptop screen wasn’t related to shipping manifests, customs fraud, or Cayman Island tax evasion. It was marked with a blood-red classification banner that made my stomach drop straight to the floor: PROJECT VANGUARD - MASTER ARCHIVE - RESTRICTED ACCESS (LEVEL 5).

I stared at the screen, my breath catching in my throat. I had spent fourteen months digging through Vance Global’s corporate archives, thinking I understood the full scope of my family’s corruption. I thought my father was just a greedy, ruthless CEO who cut corners and bribed local port officials to maintain his monopoly.

I was wrong. Shipping logistics was just the front.

According to the master files now scrolling before my eyes, Vance Global Logistics had spent the last twenty-five years operating as an illicit front company for an international intelligence-smuggling ring, moving classified defense technology, restricted dual-use microchips, and unregistered financial assets across international borders under the cover of commercial cargo containers.

And right there, nested deep within the personnel directory of Project Vanguard, was a name I never expected to see: David Vance—My Husband.

My hands began to tremble violently over the keyboard.

David hadn't died in a routine car accident five years ago. That was the official story my family had fed me, mourning him with quiet dignity while my mother handed me tissues and my father offered to help pay for Lily’s daycare.

The documents on the screen told a completely different, horrifying truth.

David hadn't died. He had been an active-duty federal investigator working undercover inside Vance Global to expose Project Vanguard. Three weeks before our daughter Lily was born, my father and my brother discovered his true identity. According to the internal security memos timestamped November 2020, David had been labeled a "critical security liability" and quietly detained inside a private, off-the-books detention facility maintained by the corporation in the Nevada desert.

His status in the system wasn't listed as Deceased. It was listed as Contained - Pending Relocation.

Tears of absolute shock and white-hot rage stung my eyes, blurring the words on the screen. My entire life—every comforting word my mother had spoken, every condescending remark my brother had thrown at me about being a helpless single mother, every dollar of "charity" my father had doled out to keep me dependent on them—was a carefully constructed cage. They hadn't just shunned me because I didn't fit into their high-society world. They had deliberately isolated me, kept me financially crippled, and convinced me my husband had abandoned us, all to ensure I would never have the resources or the standing to look into the dark corners of the family business.

And Lily—my sweet, innocent five-year-old daughter—was the granddaughter of a man who traded state secrets and human lives for a sprawling estate and a fleet of luxury cars.

The motel room suddenly felt suffocatingly small. The wind rattling against the metal gutter outside sounded like approaching footsteps.

I slammed the laptop shut, the screen going dark instantly. My heart was pounding like a sledgehammer against my ribs. I couldn't stay here. Staying here meant waiting to be hunted down by the very men who had erased my husband five years ago.

I reached down, scooped sleeping Lily gently into my arms, wrapped her in her blanket, and grabbed my coat. We were going back on the road. But this time, I wasn't running away from my family.

I was going straight to the source.
