Chapter 9 - THE VANE RETREAT

-9

The aftermath of the live broadcast was instantaneous and catastrophic for the Vane syndicate’s public facade. Within three hours of Rosalie’s address on the front steps of the Westchester estate, the Department of Justice officially announced an expanded federal grand jury investigation into Vane Industries, citing the newly surfaced nineteen-ninety-four extortion ledgers and the authenticated kidnapping records of the Arthur estate.

Stock prices for Vane-affiliated shell corporations crashed through the floorboards, wiping out billions of dollars in illicitly generated capital before the afternoon trading bell even rang on Wall Street.

Inside the Chicago penthouse, the air was thick with the scent of spilled scotch and the suffocating tension of absolute defeat.

Viktor Vane stood by the shattered remnants of his crystal glass, staring blankly at the massive television screen where cable news analysts were dissecting every single word of Rosalie’s broadcast with clinical fascination. The invincible criminal mastermind, a man who had manipulated American politics and international shipping lanes for three decades, had been brought to his knees by a pregnant woman standing on her own front porch.

The woman in the black Chanel suit—Viktor’s primary legal strategist and chief operative—stepped cautiously into the room, holding an encrypted burner phone.

“Viktor,” she began, her voice trembling slightly. “The federal marshals have just executed search warrants on our primary data centers in New Jersey and Miami. Our offshore accounts in the Caymans have been frozen by international banking regulators. The entire domestic network has been compromised.”

Viktor did not turn around. He kept his eyes fixed on the television screen, watching the crisp, confident image of Rosalie Rossi standing beside Giancarlo Rossi, radiating an aura of untouchable power.

“She didn't just beat us at our own game,” Viktor whispered, a dark, bitter laugh escaping his lips. “She rewrote the rules entirely. She took our greatest weapon—our secret history—and turned it into armor.”

“What are your orders?” the woman asked quietly. “Do we mobilize the security teams in New York? Do we attempt an extraction?”

Viktor slowly turned around, his dark, calculating eyes devoid of any lingering hope. The fire had gone out. The game was over.

“Pack the servers. Burn the physical paperwork. And book me a private flight to Zurich out of a private airstrip in Wisconsin by midnight,” Viktor ordered, his voice flat and defeated. “We are cutting our losses. The Vane syndicate is officially dead in America.”

“And Rosalie Rossi?”

Viktor walked over to the desk, picked up his trench coat, and slipped his arms into the sleeves. He cast one final, lingering look at the television screen before walking toward the private elevator.

“Leave her be,” Viktor said quietly. “Some dynasties aren't meant to be conquered. Some are meant to be inherited by someone much stronger than you ever were.”

The elevator doors closed, swallowing him into the descent, leaving the penthouse empty, silent, and entirely abandoned to the ghosts of its own making.
