Chapter 8 - THE STAGE AT WESTCHESTER

-8
By eleven-thirty in the morning, the long, private gravel driveway of the Westchester estate was choked with media vans, satellite trucks, and a dense swarm of reporters, cameramen, and financial analysts holding microphones like weapons. The iron security gates, usually locked against the outside world, stood wide open.
On the sweeping stone front steps of the mansion, a massive podium bearing the crest of the Arthur Estate had been hastily erected, flanked by four of Giancarlo’s most imposing bodyguards and a battery of high-definition broadcast cameras.
Inside the grand foyer, Rosalie stood before a full-length antique mirror, adjusting the lapels of a sharp, structured charcoal blazer that projected an aura of untouchable corporate power. Her advanced pregnancy was unmistakable beneath the tailored fabric, but there was nothing vulnerable about her stance. She stood tall, her shoulders squared, her chin held high.
Behind her, Giancarlo zipped a leather portfolio filled with certified court documents, banking ledgers, and federal investigative subpoenas.
“The live broadcast feed is connected to national networks,” Giancarlo reported, checking his watch. “You have forty-five million viewers tuning in right now. Every major financial player from Wall Street to London is watching to see if the Arthur estate collapses or fights back.”
“Let them watch,” Rosalie said calmly, picking up a sleek fountain pen and sliding it into her breast pocket. “Let’s go.”
Stepping out onto the front steps was like walking into the center of a lightning storm. The moment Rosalie and Giancarlo appeared, the flashbulbs exploded in a blinding wall of white light, and a deafening wave of overlapping shouts erupted from the press pack:
“Mrs. Rossi! Are the allegations in the Journal true?!”
“Is the Arthur estate funded by syndicate money?!”
“Where is Caleb?!”
Rosalie walked steadily to the podium, her heels clicking sharply against the stone. She did not flinch from the cameras. She placed both hands flat on the wooden lectern, waiting for the chaotic noise to taper down into a tense, expectant hush.
“Good afternoon,” Rosalie began, her voice steady, resonant, and carrying effortlessly across the microphones. “For the past twenty-four hours, a coordinated smear campaign has attempted to paint the Arthur estate—and my family—as beneficiaries of criminal enterprise. The leaks published this morning claim that our founding capital originated from syndicate slush funds tied to the dark days of nineteen-ninety-four.”
She paused, letting her gaze sweep over the sea of camera lenses, knowing that somewhere out there in a dark Chicago penthouse, Viktor Vane was watching every second of this broadcast.
“The leaks are half right,” Rosalie stated, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp register that made the murmuring press corps instantly freeze. “The capital injection of ninety-four did indeed originate from the Vane syndicate. But it wasn't a legitimate business investment. It was a ransom payment.”
A collective gasp rippled through the reporters. Notebooks flew open; camera operators zoomed in tight on her face.
“My grandfather, Arthur, refused to bow to international extortion rings,” Rosalie continued, her voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable authority. “When the syndicate attempted to seize our maritime shipping corridors thirty years ago, my family fought back. In retaliation, they engineered a hostile corporate takeover, murdered my grandfather’s business partners, and forced my mother into hiding. And when I was born, an operative inside my own home—Millicent Rossi—kidnapped me, sealed my birth records, and placed me in a gilded cage to ensure the Vane syndicate’s stolen assets would quietly blend into domestic society.”
Back in the Chicago penthouse, Viktor Vane slammed his fist down onto the mahogany desk, shattering his crystal glass of scotch against the floor as the blood drained entirely from his face.
“She knows,” Viktor hissed, his voice trembling with sudden, unmasked rage. “She knows everything.”

On the steps of the Westchester estate, Rosalie delivered the final blow.
“To every financial analyst, reporter, and syndicate ghost watching right now: the Arthur estate is fully audited, fully compliant, and completely free of criminal taint. And to the cowards hiding behind anonymous leaks in Chicago...” Rosalie leaned directly into the primary broadcast microphone, her gray eyes burning with a brilliant, lethal fire. “Come and get it. We’re waiting.”
