Chapter 9 - The Interrogation Mirror-9

Six months later.

The air inside the primary interrogation suite at the Federal Building in downtown Columbus was crisp, smelling faintly of institutional floor wax, cold espresso, and the heavy, undeniable weight of absolute justice. The room was a stark, sterile cube of white concrete and brushed steel, dominated by a massive, one-way observation mirror that took up an entire wall.

Sitting on the opposite side of the ballistic glass was my ex-mother-in-law, Lydia.

She wore a bright orange federal inmate jumpsuit, her hair unstyled and graying, her manicured nails long gone. Her wrists and ankles were secured to floor anchors by heavy steel chains that clinked dismally with her every minor movement. The arrogant, controlling matriarch who had ruled her household with fear and cruel insults had completely vanished, replaced by a broken, gaunt old woman waiting for her final sentencing hearing.

I stood behind the one-way mirror in the observation room, my arms crossed over my tailored navy wool suit jacket, my eyes fixed flat on the monitor tracking her vitals. Beside me stood Agent Sarah Harris.

"She signed the full confession forty-eight hours ago," Agent Harris reported, flipping a page on her electronic tablet. "She admitted to knowing about Walter's offshore accounts, she admitted to physically restraining your daughter on the balcony, and she gave up the names of two local pawn brokers who helped Walter fence stolen municipal assets."

"And Walter?" I asked, my voice completely flat.

"Walter accepted a plea bargain to avoid the death penalty on federal treason counts," Harris replied coldly. "He was sentenced to thirty-five years without the possibility of parole. Elmer received twenty-eight years for his active role in the biometric identity theft and money laundering. Heather got eight years for grand larceny and obstruction of justice."

I looked through the glass at Lydia. I felt no hatred, no anger, and no desire for petty revenge. The law had done its work with surgical, clinical precision.

"And Louisa's real estate trust?" I asked softly.

"The federal receivership finalized the asset clearance yesterday morning, Joanna," Agent Harris smiled, handing me an official court document bearing a gold judicial seal. "The entire twelve-million-dollar Marcus Cross Estate Trust has been fully restored, cleared of all legal liens, and placed under your sole, unchallengeable guardianship until Louisa turns twenty-one."
