Chapter 14 - The Return to the Sunlight14 -
Two days after the courtroom showdown in the mountains, the blizzard finally broke.
The heavy gray clouds parted, spilling brilliant, blinding winter sunlight across the snow-draped peaks of the Rockies. State highway crews worked around the clock to clear the mountain passes, opening the roads back up to the city just as the morning light hit the pine trees.
A federal transport vehicle, sent by Marcus to ensure our safe return, pulled up right outside the railway maintenance station where we had spent a freezing, sleepless night.
As we stepped out of the depot into the crisp morning air, the heavy weight of the past year felt like a distant, fading nightmare.
Elias loaded our bags into the back of the transport SUV, holding Sophie’s hand tightly as she skipped happily toward the passenger door, excited to get back to her own room and her toys. He turned around, walking over to where I stood looking out over the breathtaking expanse of the snow-covered valley.
He slid his arms around my waist, pulling me gently against him, resting his chin on my shoulder.
“Are you ready to go home?” he whispered softly.
I turned in his arms, wrapping my hands around his neck, looking into the warm, unwavering eyes of the man who had risked everything to keep us safe.
“Our home,” I corrected gently with a smile. “Not your father’s estate. Not a corporate penthouse. Just our home.”

We got into the vehicle, and as the SUV drove down the winding mountain pass toward the city below, the radio played a soft, acoustic melody. The road ahead was entirely unwritten, free from the shadows of the past, and filled with the bright, beautiful promise of the family we were building together.
