Chapter 13 - The Courtroom Showdown13 -

The analog radio hissed and popped with static before the secure line bridged directly into the federal courthouse audio feed in downtown Denver.

Through the small metal speaker of the railway dispatch box, the booming, authoritative voice of a federal judge filled the dusty room.

“...The court has reviewed the emergency habeas corpus petition filed by the defense counsel regarding the restructuring of the Whitaker-Sterling estate. Unless an authorized primary executive trustee steps forward to contest the temporary receivership motion within the next ten minutes, the court will formally grant administrative control back to Richard Whitaker’s designated proxy.”

My heart leaped into my throat. Ten minutes.

Elias gripped the heavy metal microphone so tightly his knuckles turned white. He clicked the talk button down.

“Objection, Your Honor!” Elias’s voice echoed sharply through the dispatch speaker, cutting straight through the solemn silence of the federal courtroom miles away.

In the railway station, we heard a sudden murmur of shock ripple through the courtroom gallery over the audio feed.

“Order in the court!” the judge’s voice boomed back. “Who is speaking on this encrypted channel? Identify yourself for the official record!”

“Elias Whitaker,” he stated clearly. “And I am speaking on behalf of Dr. Adelaide, the primary registered executive trustee of the sovereign estate. We are contesting the receivership motion.”

A sharp gasp echoed over the audio feed. We could hear the frantic shuffling of papers in the courtroom. Then, a sharp, hostile voice cut in—Richard Whitaker’s lead defense attorney shouting into the courtroom microphone.

“Your Honor, this is a procedural stall tactic! The defense is stranded in a mountain blizzard miles away from the city! They cannot produce the biometric trustee in person, which invalidates their remote challenge under section four of the corporate charter!”

The judge’s voice returned, heavy and measured. “Counselor raises a valid point. Under section four, remote audio challenges require verified biometric signature verification transmitted through the secure federal server network. Unless the primary trustee's cryptographic token is actively pinging the mainframe right now, this court must proceed with the ruling.”

Panic flared in my chest. Cryptographic token? The biometric master key was sitting in the safe deposit box at the bank back in the city—we didn't have it with us in an abandoned railway station!

Elias looked at me, panic flashing in his eyes. “Adelaide... the token. Do you have it?”

“No,” I breathed out, my hands flying to my pockets in a frantic, useless search. “I left it in the apartment when we rushed to the hospital that night!”

The countdown timer on the judge’s ruling was ticking down.

“Ten... nine... eight seconds remaining...”

Without thinking, I pushed past Elias, snatched the heavy metal microphone right out of his hand, and pressed the talk button down.

“Wait!” I shouted, my voice ringing with absolute, fierce authority.

“Identify yourself,” the judge commanded over the speaker.

“I am Dr. Adelaide. The primary executive trustee,” I said, breathing hard. “You want biometric verification? You want cryptographic proof that I am standing right here?”

“Without the physical token, verbal assertion is legally insufficient, Doctor,” the judge replied sternly.

“Check your secure server feed right now,” I demanded, my voice trembling with adrenaline. “Cross-reference the medical telemetry data from my emergency room shift at St. Jude’s Hospital seventy-two hours ago. My biometric signature, my voice imprint, and my genetic markers were permanently logged into the master sovereign vault when Sophie’s emergency intake triggered the system override!”

Absolute silence stretched across the courtroom audio feed for three agonizing seconds.

Then, a sharp gasp echoed through the speaker. It was Marcus’s voice shouting in the courtroom background.

“Your Honor! Look at the terminal feed! The sovereign vault has accepted the biometric telemetry match! The primary trustee’s signature is live!”

Through the dispatch speaker, we heard the judge rapidly typing on his desk terminal, followed by the heavy, satisfying thwack of a wooden gavel coming down hard against the bench.

“Motion denied!” the judge’s voice boomed triumphantly. “The Sterling-Whitaker Sovereign Trust remains under the exclusive custody of Dr. Adelaide. Richard Whitaker’s receivership petition is permanently dismissed with prejudice!”

Sophie let out a happy cheer, clapping her hands together, while Elias pulled me into his arms, burying his face in my neck as tears of absolute relief spilled down his cheeks.

We had won. The empire was safe, Richard’s legal trap was shattered, and our future was finally our own.
