Chapter 12 - The Choice

-12-

The silence in the underground vault was absolute, suffocating, and terrifying.

My mother was weeping softly in the corner, rocking back and forth with her head in her hands. Melissa and Troy were staring at me with desperate, pleading eyes, waiting for me to pull off a miracle that didn't exist.

Detective Harrison kept his hand on his service weapon, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles bulged. “Don't sign it, Daniel,” he whispered fiercely. “There’s always a loophole. We can fight this in federal court.”

“With what money, Harrison?” I asked bitterly, looking around the subterranean prison cell. “Vance owns the courts, the banks, the shell companies, and the narrative. If I refuse to sign, Noah loses everything. He loses me. He becomes an orphan twice over.”

I walked slowly over to the walnut desk.

The manila folder sat there like a guillotine blade suspended by a single thread. I reached out, my fingers sliding the folder open.

Inside was page after page of dense legal jargon, financial asset transfers, and binding liability waivers. At the very bottom, in glowing yellow signature tabs, my father and sister had already signed their names away, sealing their fate and chaining their sins directly to my future.

I picked up the heavy metal pen resting beside the papers.

“Daniel, no...” Harrison murmured, stepping forward.

“Look at me, Harrison,” I said, not turning around, my voice completely steady. “When I walked out of those prefabricated cabins nine days ago with Noah in my arms, I made a promise to myself. I promised that nothing—not the wilderness, not my family, not a corporate syndicate—would ever take my son away from me again.”

I lowered the pen tip to the signature line.

“If taking on their debt, their crimes, and their war is what it takes to keep Noah safe, then hand me the ledger.”

I pressed the pen hard against the paper and signed my full name: Daniel Mercer.

The moment the ink hit the final page, a soft beep echoed through the vault. On the monitor overhead, Victor Vance’s face beamed with absolute, triumphant satisfaction.

“Magnificent, Mr. Mercer,” Vance said, clapping his hands together twice in slow motion. “Welcome to the top of the food chain. Your family is free to leave the vault whenever they wish. As for you... I suggest you prepare yourself. Because now that you own Silverline Holdings, you also own its enemies.”

The monitor flickered and went dark.
