Chapter 10 - The Grand Pivot

-10-
“What are you talking about, Vance?” Harrison demanded, stepping in front of me and raising his service pistol toward the camera lens mounted on the ceiling. “You’re surrounded. Federal marshals are already mobilizing outside this compound. This game is over.”
Vance let out a smooth, unbothered laugh from the screen upstairs.
“Marshal mobilization? Detective, please,” Vance replied, shaking his head. “Do you honestly believe a regional bureaucrat like you could breach my security perimeter without my explicit permission? Every federal database inquiry, every wire transfer trace, every phone call you’ve made over the past week has been routed through my firm's private servers.”
Harrison’s face drained of color. “That’s impossible.”
“Nothing is impossible when you own the regulatory agencies,” Vance said smoothly. Then, his dark eyes shifted away from Harrison and locked directly onto mine. “And as for you, Daniel... you think you’ve come here to avenge your wife and punish your treacherous family. But you’ve missed the grand pivot entirely.”
I stepped closer to the monitor, my teeth clenched. “What grand pivot?”
“Your father didn't just borrow money from my firm, Daniel,” Vance said, leaning forward in his chair on the screen. “He used a very specific, high-value asset as primary collateral for his final, massive bridge loan eighteen months ago—right around the time Claire began asking too many questions about our corporate holdings.”
My father let out a choked gasp, burying his face in his hands. “No... don't tell him...”
“Shut up, Arthur,” Vance snapped, his voice turning ice-cold. Then he looked back at me. “Tell me, Daniel, have you ever wondered why your late wife was working as a senior corporate auditor for Silverline Holdings in the first place? Have you ever wondered how an ordinary corporate auditor stumbled upon multi-million-dollar offshore accounts entirely by accident?”
My heart skipped a beat. The room seemed to tilt on its axis.
“What are you saying?” I whispered, a cold dread washing over my veins.
“I’m saying your wife wasn't an innocent bystander caught in your family’s corruption, Daniel,” Vance said, smiling chillingly. “Claire was my lead forensic accountant planted inside your family’s real estate firm from the very beginning. She was the one who helped me orchestrate the financial trap that forced your father to sign over his entire estate to my trust.”
The words struck me like a physical blow to the chest.
Claire planted by Vance?
No. It was a lie. A sick, psychological manipulation designed to break whatever was left of my sanity. Claire loved me. We had a son together. She cried in my arms when our lives were normal.

“You’re lying!” I screamed, slamming my hand against the wall beneath the monitor. “Claire didn't work for you! She was my wife!”
“She was both,” Vance said quietly, his voice carrying an undeniable ring of cold, documented truth. “And when she tried to double-cross my firm to run away with you and the insurance scheme money... your family took matters into their own hands and eliminated her. But don't worry, Daniel. Your family’s debt has now been officially transferred... to you.”
