Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Vault-5

At 9:15 AM the following morning, the sun beat down mercilessly on the granite steps of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

A sleek black limousine pulled up to the curb. Derek stepped out first, followed by Rachel, Gregory, Pamela, and two corporate attorneys carrying leather briefcases. They walked up the steps with the posture of conquerors, laughing softly among themselves.

They walked into the cool, quiet lobby and were met immediately by the Assistant Bank Manager, a sharp man named Mr. Alistair.

“Good morning, Mr. Lawson,” Mr. Alistair said, bowing slightly to Gregory. “We have everything prepared for your access to Vault 408.”

“Excellent,” Gregory said pompously, pulling the velvet bag from his jacket. “We are on a tight schedule. We need to retrieve the documents, execute the escrow release, and be at the airfield by one o'clock.”

“Right this way, gentlemen,” Mr. Alistair said, leading them down the grand marble staircase into the secure vault basement.

They passed through two heavy steel security gates, their footsteps echoing against the polished tile floor. They reached the main vault chamber, where the massive ten-ton steel door stood wide open.

Inside the vault viewing room, sitting quietly at a long polished mahogany table, was a man wearing a dark blue suit, calmly reading a newspaper.

Rachel stopped dead in her tracks. Her champagne hangover instantly evaporated. “Lucas...?”

Derek froze, his eyes narrowing in sharp shock. “What the hell are you doing here?”

Lucas slowly lowered the newspaper, setting it flat on the table. His eyes were cold, clear, and completely devoid of the tired, compliant warmth Rachel had seen in them for six years.

“Hello, Rachel,” Lucas said softly, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. “Hello, Derek. Gregory. Pamela.”

Gregory stepped forward, his face flushing dark red with anger. “How did you get here?! Who paid for your flight?! You’re supposed to be in Idaho managing the warehouse failure!”

“The warehouse failure was fixed three days ago, Gregory,” Lucas replied smoothly, standing up from his chair. “And I didn't need anyone to pay for my flight. I used the corporate expense account—the one you thought you had drained last week.”

Rachel took a step back, grabbing Derek’s arm. “Lucas... why aren't you at home? Is... is Grandfather okay?”

Lucas walked around the mahogany table, stopping five feet from them. He looked directly into Rachel’s eyes.

“Grandfather is fine, Rachel,” Lucas said quietly. “In fact, he’s better than he’s been in two years. His speech has remarkably recovered... now that your mother is no longer putting organophosphate poison in his morning soup.”

The room went dead silent.

Pamela let out a sharp, choked gasp, stumbling backward against the steel wall. Gregory’s hand began to tremble violently.

Derek, however, quickly recovered his composure. He let out a cold, arrogant chuckle, stepping in front of Rachel.

“So the old man woke up,” Derek sneered, pulling out his cell phone. “It doesn't change anything, Lucas. We hold the legal power-of-attorney. We hold the corporate majority shares. And Gregory has the second key to Vault 408. You’re just a glorified lumberjack playing in a game you don't understand.”

Derek turned to Mr. Alistair. “Manager, remove this man from the premises immediately. We are executing an authorized corporate asset retrieval.”

Mr. Alistair didn't move. He stood by the vault door with his hands folded neatly in front of him.

“I’m afraid I cannot do that, Mr. Pendelton,” Mr. Alistair said calmly.

Derek frowned. “What did you call me?”

“Mr. Derek Pendelton,” a powerful, deep voice boomed from the back corner of the vault chamber.

A heavy wooden door opened, and Walter Lawson stepped into the room, supported by a polished cane, flanked by two armed Bahamian Police Officers and Marcus Thorne.

Rachel shrieked, dropping her designer handbag onto the floor. “Grandfather?!”
