Chapter 12 - The Lake House Sanctuary-12

Thirty miles north of the timber mill, nestled along the pristine shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene, sat a cozy wooden home built from natural pine and local river stone.
A wide timber deck extended over the clear water, where Walter Lawson sat in a comfortable rocking chair, watching the sunset cast a brilliant golden light across the lake.
Beside him sat Dr. Arthur Reynolds, enjoying a cup of dark coffee.
“His vitals are exceptional, Arthur,” Reynolds chuckled, checking his old friend’s wrist pulse. “You might outlive all of us.”
“I have too much good air to breathe to die anytime soon, Arthur,” Walter smiled, taking a sip of herbal tea.
The crunch of tires on the pine-needle driveway signaled the arrival of Lucas’s truck.
Lucas and Clara stepped out of the vehicle, carrying bags of fresh groceries, local berries, and freshly baked sourdough bread from the town bakery.
“Grandfather!” Clara called out warmly as she walked up the deck steps, giving the old man a affectionate hug. Over the last two years, Clara had become like a granddaughter to Walter, bringing warmth and laughter back into a life once shadowed by betrayal.
“How was the city, Lucas?” Walter asked as Lucas set the grocery bags on the outdoor table.
“The forestry center approved twenty new scholarships for local students today,” Lucas reported, pulling up a chair beside Walter. “And I met with Derek.”
Walter looked at Lucas, his sharp eyes softening with deep understanding. “You gave him the 1935 letters?”
“I did,” Lucas nodded. “He needed to know the truth, Walter.”
Walter closed his eyes for three seconds, letting out a long, peaceful breath that seemed to lift forty years of heavy burden from his shoulders.

“My father always believed that truth was like water,” Walter murmured softly. “It might be blocked by rock or mud for a season, but eventually, it carves its way through everything.”
They sat together on the deck as the stars began to appear above the Idaho mountains, listening to the gentle lap of water against the shore, enjoying the profound peace of a family restored.
