Chapter 9 - The Gulfstream Descent-The Gulfstream Descent

The news of Daniel’s flight hit the quiet isolation suite like a sudden drop in cabin pressure, instantly freezing the warm coffee in my stomach. I stood up from the lounge chair, my fingers clenching around the encrypted smartphone so hard the aluminum frame groaned against my palm.

"He’s not stopping, Sarah," I said, my voice dropping into a hollow, dangerous register. "He knows the federal grand jury is convening in the morning. He’s flying into Midway because he thinks he can execute one last, desperate extraction before the federal warrants are unsealed at sunrise."

"Midway is less than twenty minutes from this building, Mara," Sarah Lin said, already tapping her screen to alert the hospital’s primary security division. "But he can’t just march into this facility with a rogue state warrant. This is Cook County, Illinois. Arizona state police have zero legal authority on this side of the state line, and the private security team on our roof is comprised entirely of retired federal marshals who carry automatic weapons."

"He’s not going to use an official warrant this time, Sarah," I said, turning to look at Sophie’s peaceful form through the glass window. "He’s desperate. A desperate man with four billion dollars and a federal prison sentence staring him in the face doesn't care about state lines anymore. He will hire private tactical contractors, he will bribe airport ground crews, he will create a diversion—he will do whatever it takes to get inside this room."

The heavy steel door of the isolation suite suddenly clicked open, and Nurse Clara Higgins stepped inside. She had stripped off her flight helmet and heavy leather jacket, her face covered in a layer of grime and exhaust soot from the Eurocopter flight, but her eyes were burning with an intense, frantic energy.

"Dr. Mara, I just intercepted a localized aviation advisory frequency on my portable scanner," Clara said, leaning against the door frame to catch her breath. "The private Gulfstream G650 registered to Daniel’s real estate corporation just cleared the low-altitude approach corridor over southern Chicago. But they aren't landing at Midway."

I narrowed my eyes. "Where are they landing, Clara?"

"They just filed an emergency landing declaration for the old Meigs Field helicopter clearing—the private corporate concrete pad that sits right on Lake Michigan’s Northerly Island," Clara whispered, her face pale. "It’s less than two miles down the lakefront from this hospital. They claimed an internal engine fire to bypass the standard air-traffic delays, but the radar logs show they have two black, high-powered speedboats waiting at the harbor docks directly adjacent to the landing pad."

The calculation was terrifyingly clear. He wasn't using the roads. He was using the lake. He was planning to land his private jet on the isolated island runway, transfer his tactical team to high-speed watercraft, and assault the hospital’s private lakefront medical transit dock—a low-profile entrance used exclusively for the emergency water-evacuation drills that most city hospitals maintained but rarely secured with heavy weaponry.

"He’s bypassing the surface grids entirely," Sarah Lin breathed, her fingers typing furiously on her terminal, her brilliant mind instantly mapping the security vulnerabilities of the lakefront wing. "The lakefront transit dock connects directly to the sub-basement utility corridors—the very corridors that lead straight into this isolation suite."

"Then we turn the utility corridors into a graveyard for his ambitions, Sarah," a heavy, gravelly voice boomed from the doorway.

We spun around quickly. Standing at the entrance of the suite was Special Agent Raymond Vance—Evelyn’s brother, a towering, broad-shouldered man with a scarred jaw and the cold, unyielding eyes of a veteran FBI tactical commander. He wore a heavy black tactical vest over his civilian clothes, a sleek, federal-issue automatic rifle slung across his chest with a casual, deadly familiarity. Behind him, four heavily armed members of the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team stood in silent, dark gray tactical gear, their faces obscured by ballistic masks.

"Evelyn called me from the holding cell in Phoenix before they took her phone, Mara," Agent Vance said, a dark, brilliant smile breaking across his scarred face. "She told me to make sure my calendar was clear for a little domestic house-cleaning tonight. We’ve been waiting for Daniel’s jet to enter Illinois airspace for two hours. The federal grand jury just signed an emergency, pre-dawn arrest warrant for federal grand larceny, corporate extortion, and attempted murder of a witness."

He tapped the side of his automatic rifle, the metallic click sounding like a countdown clock striking zero. "We let him land on the island, Mara. We let him get into his boats. The moment his feet touch that lakefront dock, he’s no longer an elite billionaire fighting a divorce—he’s an armed federal insurgent executing a domestic terror assault on a medical facility. And my team has full authorization to terminate his contract permanently."
