Chapter 10 - The Lakefront Ambush-The Lakefront Ambush

The sub-basement utility corridor of the Shriners Children's Hospital was a narrow, low-ceilinged cavern of rough concrete, thick steam pipes, and roaring industrial ventilation shafts that smelled of oil, stagnant water, and old iron. The ambient light was a low, industrial amber, casting deep, shifting shadows against the walls as the storm outside hammered against the massive reinforced steel floodgates that separated the hospital's lower machinery from the cold, violent waters of Lake Michigan.
I stood in the shadow of a massive electrical transformer housing, my body wrapped in a heavy tactical ballistic vest that Agent Vance had forced me to wear, my hands tightly gripping a secure, high-definition monitor display that was linked to the lakefront dock's low-light infrared cameras outside. Sophie remained safely upstairs, protected by Sarah Lin, Clara, and two heavily armed federal agents who had turned Isolation Room 402 into an absolute concrete fortress.
"They’ve entered the harbor inlet," Vance whispered beside me, his voice a low rumble that was barely audible over the roar of the ventilation shafts. He held his automatic rifle at the low-ready position, his eyes fixed on the thick steel floodgate forty feet down the corridor. "Two high-powered Midnight Express speedboats, running dark with no navigation lights. They’ve just cut their engines and are drifting into the concrete slip directly outside our loading bay."
On my monitor screen, the infrared feed shifted from a dark green void into a brilliant, electric white display of thermal heat signatures. Through the driving rain lashing the harbor docks, I watched the silhouettes of six men emerge from the speedboats. They wore sleek, dark maritime tactical gear and full-face gas masks, carrying short-barreled automatic weapons. At the center of the group, his thermal signature radiating a violent, frantic white light, was Daniel. He wasn't wearing his tailored suit anymore; he wore a tactical jacket, a heavy steel crowbar in his left hand, his face contorted into a manic, unhinged mask of absolute desperation.
"He’s completely stepped across the line, Mara," Vance muttered, his jaw tightening as he watched the monitor. "He brought a contractor team from an offshore maritime security firm. This is a full military breach."
Daniel stepped up to the exterior control panel of the loading bay floodgate, his left hand slamming the heavy steel crowbar directly into the electronic conduit box. A brilliant flash of white sparks exploded across the screen as the high-voltage short-circuit blew the manual release valves, and with a low, groaning screech of hydraulic fluid, the massive, ten-ton reinforced steel floodgates began to slowly slide open, letting the cold, wet lake wind and the sound of the roaring storm crash into the sub-basement corridor.
Daniel and his five tactical operators surged through the opening, their automatic weapons raised, their boots splashing through the shallow puddles of water on the concrete floor.
"Mara!" Daniel’s voice roared through the cavernous corridor, his voice amplified by the concrete walls, sounding entirely unhinged, a feral screech that broke through the roar of the ventilation shafts. "I know you're down here! I know you can hear me! You thought you could run to Chicago? You thought a few federal grants could hide my daughter from me? I built the house she grew up in, and I will tear this entire city to the ground before I let you hand that phone to a grand jury! Show yourself! Show me where the girl is, or I will blow this sub-basement into the lake!"
Agent Vance didn't wait for him to finish his sentence. He stepped out from the shadow of the transformer housing, his automatic rifle locking onto the center of the leading tactical operator’s chest with a lightning-fast, brilliant precision.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Drop them right now!" Vance’s voice boomed across the corridor like a thunderclap.

The leading operator instinctively raised his weapon, his finger tightening on the trigger, but before he could fire a single round, a deafening explosion of tactical gunfire erupted from the shadows behind us. The four members of the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team opened fire simultaneously, a high-velocity wall of lead that instantly neutralized the three leading operators, sending them crashing to the concrete floor as their automatic weapons clattered away into the darkness.
Daniel gasped, stumbling backward into the freezing spray of the lake water coming through the open gate, his crowbar dropping from his hands with a loud, metallic clang. He looked into the dark shadows of the corridor, his manic arrogance instantly vanishing, replaced by a raw, paralyzing terror as the crimson laser sights of four federal automatic rifles locked directly onto his chest.
