Chapter 6 - The Permanent Abort-6

Marcus Croft didn't panic. He didn't turn around to argue or plead for a corporate settlement. With a single, smooth, practiced movement, he reached beneath the administrative desk console, his hand emerging with a short-barreled compact automatic carbine, leveling the barrel straight at Victor’s chest before the plaster dust could even clear from the doorway.
"You really are a remarkably stubborn woman, Sterling," Marcus hissed, his voice a cold, mechanical rasp that carried zero human empathy. His finger tightened around the trigger guard, his knuckles turning a sharp, bloodless white beneath the amber glare of the emergency lights. "The Nicosia wire may be frozen, but the master utility framework for this county is still linked to our family's private trust network in Europe. If you shoot me tonight, the central server core will execute an immediate thermal runaway script, vaporizing every digital footprint of your family trust before the courts can even assign a defense attorney to my file."
He looked down at his laptop monitor. The progress bar for the master data extraction loop had just hit 96.4%.
96.5%...
96.6%...
"The transmission finalizes in precisely ninety seconds, Vivienne," the operator whispered, a cold, ruthless smile touching his lips as he adjusted his grip on the weapon. "Once the master keys hit the Cyprus array, your company becomes our property, and that little orphan girl’s foundation will be liquidated by order of the state insurance commissioner before dawn. Drop the weapon. Now."
Victor didn't drop the pistol. I took a slow, measured step forward, my gray eyes locking onto the operator’s face with a freezing, absolute finality that made the private operator’s finger twitch against the trigger.
"The foundation doesn't rely on your state commissioners, kid," I said, my voice dropping into a low, gravelly baritone that carried the absolute weight of my family’s truth. "And Arthur’s daughter isn't an asset on your ledger anymore. She’s the kid who watched her mother break an electronic vault with a fire ax. She knows exactly what the truth looks like when it comes through the door."
With a sudden, violent heave, I didn't lunge toward the gun; I hurled the heavy steel crowbar straight into the center of the massive, high-voltage electrical transformer box mounted on the concrete pylon directly adjacent to the server racks.
CRASH-BOOM.
The heavy iron bar smashed through the protective fiberglass shielding, short-circuiting the main three-phase industrial power line running into the warehouse grid. A blinding, blue-white explosion of electrical arc fire erupted from the box, hissing violently as the pouring rain leaking through the corrugated roof flooded the exposed circuits.

The automatic carbine fired a wild, uncontrolled three-round burst into the concrete ceiling as the operator was thrown backward by the sheer concussive force of the electrical blast, his weapon flying from his hands and spinning off into the dark waters of the shipping canal drainage trench below.
The entire warehouse was plunged into a sudden, pitch-black twilight, the high-density server racks grinding to a dead halt as the main circuit breakers tripped, leaving nothing but the vibrant neon-green countdown timer on my personal mobile device flashing down toward zero in the dark.
