Chapter 3 - The Sterling Intercept-3

"The local police units aren't clearing the gate, Cassandra," a deep, mature voice spoke from the shadows of the utility stairwell behind her.
Cassandra froze, her hand fumbling inside her cream coat pocket, her face draining of color so rapidly it looked as though she had been struck by an invisible fist. She turned her head slowly to look toward the elevator corridor pylon.
Stepping out from the dark was my third brother, Victor Sterling. He was dressed in a sharp, tailored black wool trench coat, his gold federal badge clipped to his lapel, followed by a full platoon of heavily armed military police and state investigative units whose rifle barrels were raised and rock-steady.
"Victor," I sighed, a profound, soul-cleansing relief softening the hard lines around my eyes as he walked into the apartment lobby, his combat boots leaving wet, muddy tracks across the entryway mat.
"The perimeter is fully sealed, Viv," Victor said, his voice a hard baritone of absolute tactical authority that cut through the storm like a blade. He didn't look at Cassandra; his eyes remained fixed on the digital data tablet she held in her hand. "The FBI's Financial Crimes Division just executed a corporate asset seizure warrant on the main offices of Vanguard Global downtown fifteen minutes ago. Your mother’s legal firm in New York has been locked down under a federal racketeering mandate, Cassandra. The pipeline is smashed."
"This is an international treaty violation!" Cassandra shrieked, her upper-class composure completely bursting into a jagged, breathless panic as Officer Briggs hauled her arms behind her back, the heavy steel handcuffs snapping around her wrists with a sharp, mechanical click. "My family controls the urban development grants for this entire county, Senator! You can't hold me on a civil adoption dispute!"
May you like
"You're not being held for a civil adoption dispute, Rachel Lawson," Victor said coldly, using her real birth name—the identity she had systematically erased twelve years ago after executing a similar corporate execution scheme against a wealthy software executive in Ohio. "You’re being held for federal bank fraud, identity theft, and the systematic economic exploitation of a federal witness sanctuary. Take her down to the transport vehicles, Briggs."
I turned back to Clara, kneeling one last time beside her damp white towel, my hands gently framing her pale face. "You're safe now, Clara. The clipboard lady is done. The numbers on your back... my brother is going to help us turn them into a shield that no monster can ever break down again."
