Chapter 8 - The Interrogator’s Mirror-8

Six months later.

The air inside the federal courthouse in downtown New Haven was crisp, smelling faintly of institutional floor wax, leather chairs, and the quiet, crushing weight of absolute justice. I sat in the witness waiting room, dressed in a clean, tailored gray civilian wool suit, my hair neatly pinned back, my hands resting calmly on the polished oak table.

The heavy double doors opened with a soft click, and Major General Vance walked inside, carrying two cups of black coffee. He looked relaxed, his dress uniform replaced by a sharp professional suit, his eyes bright and clear of the intense exhaustion that had defined our lives during the Apex corporate raids.

"The federal grand jury just finalized the sentencing guidelines on the racketeering and extortion counts, Claire," Vance said, handing me a cup. "Senator Julian Croft accepted a non-parole plea agreement twenty minutes ago. In exchange for a full confession regarding the land manipulation rings and the Nicosia pipelines, the judge sentenced him to thirty-five years at the ADX Florence maximum-security facility. He’s never holding a committee seat again."

"And Daniel?" I asked, taking a slow, quiet sip of the coffee.

"He was found guilty on all forty-two counts of wire fraud, grand theft, corporate forgery, and civil rights conspiracy," Vance said, his face hardening into a look of absolute finality. "The judge denied any possibility of parole, sentencing him to twenty-five years in a federal penitentiary, to be served consecutively with a secondary ten-year sentence for the attempted destruction of federal evidence. His personal assets have been permanently seized under the RICO statutes, and Apex Development has been officially dissolved."

Special Agent Harris from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division stepped into the room, her expression solemn but victorious as she pulled a thick manila folder from her jacket.

"Colonel Bennett, your parents-in-law, Arthur and Linda Hayes, are waiting for you in the central rotunda," Agent Harris said, a small, proud smile touching her lips. "The federal receivership has completed the title restoration process on their property. Because you cleared the foreclosure using your private federal reserves, the court has legally registered the home under a permanent, non-taxable civil sanctuary trust. The house belongs to them unconditionally for the rest of their days, Claire. No corporate developer can ever touch their soil again."

I stood up slowly, smoothing the fabric of my suit jacket, a deep, profound sense of relief softening the lines around my eyes. The invisible cage of marital deceit and quiet isolation that had crushed my life during my pregnancy had finally, permanently shattered, leaving nothing but the open sky ahead.

"There’s someone else who wants to see you before they transport the prisoners to the holding facility," Harris added, her eyes cutting toward the heavy security corridor down the hall. "Daniel legally requested a final meeting with his former wife under the supervision of the federal marshals. You don't have to go, Claire. You don't owe him a single second of your time."

I looked down at my right hand, where the faint indentation of my old wedding band had completely vanished, replaced by the clean, unblemished skin of a woman who owned her own destiny.

"I’m going," I said, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of fear. "I want him to look at me one last time... from behind the glass."
