Chapter 4 - Storage Unit 108-4

The interior of the subterranean sub-level beneath the Ironwood Maritime Annex—sorry, the Columbus Logistics Center—was a cavernous, low-ceilinged vault of wet masonry, roaring ventilation turbines, and exposed high-voltage conduits that vibrated with a deafening, industrial hum. The air down here was hot, thick, smelling faintly of hot axle grease, diesel exhaust, and the unmistakable, high-pitched digital whine of a high-density server core operating on a stolen industrial power grid.

Julian Reeves and I moved with clinical speed down the narrow iron catwalk, guided only by the narrow, red-filtered beams of our tactical flashlights. With every level we descended into the building’s foundations, the atmospheric pressure rose, generated by the thousands of high-density processor blades humming inside the central server vaults ahead.

We reached the end of the long corridor aisle where Sector 4 opened up into a large, vaulted concrete room dominated by a single row of heavy, reinforced corrugated steel doors. Standing before the door marked Unit 108 was the master cryptographic console terminal—the central database hub for Noraline Holdings’ offshore operations.

The screen was glowing a malicious, vibrant neon crimson overlay, its technical interface rendering a rapid cascade of delete indicators as the system's primary file partitions were systematically overwritten with random garbage data tracks.

Sitting at the master terminal console, his expensive charcoal suit jacket thrown over the back of a metal tool chest, his fingers moving with clinical speed across a mechanical keyboard, was Brent.

Beside his laptop screen sat the original carbon-fiber document box—the exact ledger container our security teams had been searching for since the courtroom unmasking.

"Step away from the keyboard, Brent!" Julian’s voice roared through the concrete room like a pipe clap of thunder, his service weapon raised and rock-steady as he stepped into the light. "Federal agents! Put your hands on your head and step away from the desk!"

Brent didn't panic. He didn't turn around to argue or plead for a corporate settlement or a million-dollar compromise. With a single, smooth, practiced movement, his right hand reached beneath the administrative desk console, his hand emerging with a short-barreled compact automatic carbine, leveling the barrel straight at Julian’s chest before the plaster dust could even clear from the doorway frame.

"You really are a remarkably stubborn woman, Avery," Brent hissed, looking past Julian's shoulder to lock his bloodshot eyes onto my pregnant frame, his voice a cold, mechanical rasp that carried zero human empathy. His finger tightened around the trigger guard, his knuckles turning a sharp, bloodless white beneath the amber glare of the emergency lights. "The Nicosia wire may be frozen, but the master utility framework for this entire county is still linked to Sloane's private trust network in Europe. If you take another step... I will execute an immediate thermal runaway script, vaporizing every digital footprint of your family trust before the courts can even assign a defense attorney to my file."
