Chapter 3 - The Port of Entry-3

The high-performance luxury SUV Julian Reeves had deployed for our security convoy tore through the dark, rain-swept industrial corridors along the Scioto River, its heavy tires screaming against the frozen asphalt as we pushed toward the downtown data annex. A blinding sheet of freezing autumn rain battered the reinforced windshield, smearing the skeletal silhouettes of the abandoned manufacturing foundries into a shifting, featureless wasteland of gray water.

The time was 11:24 a.m. We had precisely thirty-six minutes before the financial clearing sessions closed their morning clearing loops in New York, executing the automatic verification script that would permanently lock the asset transfers inside the state registry system.

I sat in the middle row cabin, my arm resting securely over the back of Lily’s small shoulder as she drifted into an exhausted sleep against my side, her worn stuffed rabbit tucked safely beneath her chin. Beside me on the mahogany console counter sat my personal laptop terminal, its encrypted interface rendering a rapid, scrolling cascade of emerald-green financial ledger lines.

"Connection established, Avery," my older brother, Victor Winters—the chief operations counsel for Winters Global Investment Group, who had quietly arrived from Boston three hours ago—said through my wireless earpiece. His voice was a hard baritone of absolute tactical focus. "The Nicosia wires... the offshore shell accounts Brent and Sloane Mercer used to clone your biometric verification tokens last winter... our cyber unit just finalized the deep-system sweep from the root terminal. The master validation files are completely mirrored to our data core."

A bitter, cold chuckle escaped my lips as I reviewed the file directory. "Brent believed I was a broken, desperate woman who was giving him the house and the savings because I was too weak to survive the humiliation of his affair, Victor. He thought my silence at the kitchen island for the last eight months was a confession of defeat. He had completely forgotten that the digital signature tokens he used to authorize those Cyprus wires... they were hardwired to my old state compliance network."

"He didn't just forget, Avery; his mother, Celeste, actively coordinated with Sloane's legal firm to have you declared 'medically incompetent' through those forged psychiatric evaluation sheets six weeks ago," Victor reported ruthlessly. "They needed you legally locked inside a high-risk medical facility before the quarterly audit hit the state registry today, knowing that your entry would automatically transfer the controlling fifty-one percent voting block of your family's ancestral land-banking estate straight into their hands."
