Chapter 12 - The Interrogator’s Mirror-12

Later that afternoon, after the guests had departed and the sun began its slow descent behind the Blue Ridge Mountains, Arthur Pendelton handed me a leather folder containing the final legal updates from the Department of Justice.

We sat together at a rustic teak picnic table on the lawn, watching Tyler down near the water's edge, teaching a group of visiting middle-school students how to calibrate an optical water-quality sensor.

"The formal criminal trial for Harrison Vance concluded two hours ago in Richmond, Evelyn," Arthur reported, sliding the certified court decree across the wood table.

"What was the sentence?" I asked calmly, taking a slow sip of my iced tea.

"On all seventeen federal RICO counts, including wire fraud, judicial bribery, and international money laundering... Harrison Vance has been sentenced to THIRTY-FIVE YEARS at the Federal Correctional Institution in Florence, Colorado, without the possibility of early parole."

I looked down at the paper. The bold black letters of the judicial decree were absolute and permanent.

"And Marcus Croft?" I asked.

"Croft received twenty-two years for judicial corruption and tax evasion," Arthur added. "Former Judge Miller surrendered his law license permanently and has been remanded to a state facility for twelve years. The entire network has been completely eradicated."

My phone chimed on the table—a brief, automated notification from the Federal Bureau of Prisons:

Status Update: Inmate #884192-VA (Harrison Vance). Location: FCI Florence. Security Level: Maximum. Status: Confinement Active / All Visitation Rights Permanently Restricted by Judicial Order.

I stared at the screen for three seconds.

I felt no rush of vengeful triumph. I felt no lingering anger, no bitterness, and no phantom pain. The memory of the cold courtroom, the airport gate, and the toxic lies that had haunted my life for years had lost every single shred of their power over my soul.

I swiped the notification away, locked the screen, and placed the phone face-down on the table forever.
