Chapter 11 - Shadows in the Nursery

-11-
The autumn wind howled outside the thick, bulletproof glass of the Greenwich estate, rattling the ancient oak trees that lined the private drive. Inside, the house was wrapped in a deep, peaceful slumber. The grandfather clock in the main foyer chimed softly, marking 2:00 AM.
In the master suite, Adrian lay awake in the king-sized bed, his dark eyes fixed on the ceiling. Beside him, Emily breathed softly, her face relaxed against the pillow, her hand resting lightly over his arm.
Though Damien Cross and Vincent Vance were locked away in federal holding facilities awaiting trial, the instincts forged during twenty years in the New York underworld never truly went to sleep. A phantom itch—the prickle at the back of the neck that always preceded a tactical shift—was pulling at Adrian’s senses.
Slowly, carefully, so as not to wake Emily, Adrian slid his powerful upper body from the mattress into his carbon-fiber wheelchair parked right beside the bed. With practiced, silent precision, he locked the wheels and wheeled himself out into the dimly lit second-floor hallway.
The corridor was quiet, illuminated only by the faint amber glow of baseboard nightlights. He rolled toward the north wing of the estate—toward Toby’s newly decorated bedroom.
As he approached the heavy oak door, he noticed something strange.
The door was cracked open about an inch. A faint, cool draft drifted out into the hallway.
Adrian’s pulse spiked. Marcus and his security team maintained a strict perimeter protocol; interior doors were never left unlatched.
Reaching down beneath the cushion of his wheelchair, Adrian's fingers closed around the cold, checkered grip of a suppressed Sig Sauer P320. He flicked the safety off with his thumb.
With his left hand, he pushed the nursery door open slowly, soundlessly, sliding into the darkened room.
The moonlight cut through the sheer curtains, illuminating the interior. Toby was fast asleep in his bed, his little chest rising and falling rhythmically with the aid of the humming oxygen concentrator.
Standing beside the bed, silhouetted against the window, was a dark, slender figure dressed entirely in black tactical gear, a black balaclava concealing their face. In their gloved hand, the figure held a small, specialized medical syringe, hovering directly over the intravenous line feeding into Toby’s arm.
“Don't move an inch,” Adrian’s voice sliced through the darkness like a razor blade, cold, flat, and dripping with lethal intent.
The intruder froze instantly. Slowly, the masked figure turned around, lowering the syringe.
“Drop the needle, or I put a hollow-point through your kneecap before you can take another breath,” Adrian commanded, his grip tightening on the pistol, the suppressed barrel aimed with absolute, unyielding precision at the intruder's chest.
The figure let out a soft, feminine chuckle—a sound that sent a cold shockwave straight down Adrian’s spine.
Slowly, the intruder reached up with their gloved hand and pulled the black balaclava off.
Revealed in the pale moonlight was a face Adrian thought he would never see again outside of a federal mugshot.
Jessica Vance.
Her blonde hair was matted with sweat, her eyes wild, desperate, and hollowed out by pure, unadulterated madness.
“You’re a hard man to kill, Adrian,” Jessica whispered, a twisted, manic smile stretching across her lips. “You thought throwing Damien and my uncle to the wolves would save you? You thought you won?”
Adrian’s finger hovered over the trigger, his heart hammering against his ribs not out of fear, but out of a cold, suffocating rage. “How did you bypass the perimeter guards, Jessica?”
“Guards are easily distracted when you know every blind spot in the security grid—blind spots my uncle and I designed into this house ourselves,” Jessica hissed, taking a slow step toward Toby’s bed. “If I can't have this estate, if Damien can't have the empire, then you don't get to keep your new little family either.”

Adrian didn't hesitate. He pulled the slide back on the Sig Sauer, the metallic click echoing like thunder in the quiet room.
“Take one more step toward that boy, Jessica,” Adrian whispered, his eyes burning with the fiery wrath of the Ghost of Red Hook, “and you won't live long enough to regret it.”
