Chapter 10 - The Foundations of Stone

-10-

Two weeks after the grounding at Teterboro Airport and the subsequent dismantling of Vincent Vance’s corporate syndicate, the grand estate in Greenwich felt entirely different. The oppressive shadows of betrayal and corporate warfare had lifted, replaced by the warm, vibrant laughter of a family finally healing from the inside out.

The sprawling back lawns overlooking the Hudson River were once again set up for a gathering—not a high-society wedding filled with fake friends and treacherous politicians, but a small, intimate family barbecue.

At the center of the patio, little Toby—now looking healthier, with color returning to his cheeks and his breathing steady and clear—was eagerly showing off his newly painted model airplane to Adrian, who sat in his wheelchair at the outdoor picnic table, offering patient, expert advice on wing assembly.

Emily stood near the outdoor kitchen, watching the two of them interact with a deep, profound sense of peace settling in her chest. The haunting memories of sleeping in her Honda Civic outside Mount Sinai Hospital felt like a lifetime ago. She was no longer a terrified widow hiding from the world; she was the matriarch of the Moretti estate, surrounded by a fortress of absolute loyalty and unconditional love.

Marcus Hale walked up beside her, holding a tray of iced lemonade. “Looks like the little guy is making your husband work hard,” Marcus noted with a rare, amused smile.

Emily smiled, taking a glass from the tray. “Adrian loves it. I don't think he’s felt this relaxed in ten years.”

“Well, he earned it,” Marcus said, his tone turning serious for a moment. “The federal prosecutors just filed formal racketry and conspiracy charges against Vincent and Damien. Their assets have been fully liquidated and transferred into a blind trust managed by Moretti Capital—with a permanent, irrevocable endowment set aside for Toby’s medical care and foundation.”

“Thank you, Marcus,” Emily said softly, looking the chief of security in the eye. “For everything. You kept us alive when things looked impossible.”

“I only work for the boss, Mrs. Moretti,” Marcus tipped an imaginary hat with a respectful nod. “And the boss made the best decision of his life the day he let you walk out of those catering tents.”

Across the lawn, Adrian caught her eye. Even from a distance, the intense, dangerous edge in his dark gaze melted away into a warm, undeniable affection. He smiled, lifting his glass in a silent toast to her.

Emily raised her own glass in response, feeling the quiet strength of the man she had rescued—and who had rescued her in return. The empire was secure. The traitors were gone. And the Ghost of Red Hook had finally found his true home.
