Chapter 7 - The Midnight Execution of Hope-7-

At exactly 1:55 AM, the heavy steel door of cell block 4B swung open with a loud, metallic clatter that echoed down the desolate corridor.

Officer Thomas Vance stood outside, looking nervous, his uniform collar damp with cold sweat. He unlocked Nathan’s handcuffs and gestured frantically toward the end of the hall.

"Move," Thomas hissed. "The transport manifest is logged in the system. Shift supervisor is half-asleep in the breakroom. We have exactly four minutes to reach the service elevator before the internal patrol sweep."

Nathan stepped out of the cell, his legs stiff, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He was free. Or at least, that was the illusion his desperate mind was screaming at him to believe. He followed Thomas down the sterile corridor, turning corner after corner until they reached the freight loading dock on the sub-basement level.

A large, armored Department of Corrections transport van sat idling in the shadows, its diesel engine rumbling with a low, deep vibration.

Nathan smiled, a dark, triumphant grin stretching across his face. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a handwritten slip of paper containing his Swiss account access codes, and thrust it toward the guard.

"Transfer the funds, Thomas," Nathan whispered eagerly, reaching for the rear door handle of the van. "We did it."

The rear doors of the transport van didn't swing open.

Instead, they were violently kicked outward from the inside.

Before Nathan could react, two heavy-set federal tactical officers wearing matte-black body armor and night-vision goggles surged out of the vehicle. In less than a second, Nathan was slammed face-first against the cold concrete floor, his arms wrenched behind his back, and heavy steel handcuffs clamped painfully around his wrists.

"Federal marshals! Stay down!" a voice bellowed above him.

"What—what is this?!" Nathan screamed, his face pressed against the filthy concrete. "I have a transport order! Officer Vance approved this! It’s a legal transfer!"

Beside him, Thomas Vance was already on his knees, his hands locked behind his head, sobbing hysterically as three armed agents stripped his badge and radio away.

"Officer Vance is under arrest for bribery, conspiracy, and aiding a high-security federal escape attempt," the lead marshal announced coldly.

Footsteps echoed across the loading dock.

Nathan lifted his head, spitting blood and dust from his lip, and squinted through the harsh overhead glare of the security lights.

A pair of polished leather shoes stopped inches from his face.

He slowly raised his gaze.

Standing above him, looking down with absolute, chilling detachment, was Elias Vale.

And standing directly behind my father, wearing her signature black wool coat and holding a leather portfolio under her arm, was me.

Nathan’s eyes went wide with pure, unadulterated horror. The breath left his lungs as if he had been struck by a physical blow.

"Serena..." he choked out, his voice cracking into a pathetic, whimpering rasp. "You... you planned this. You knew about the bribe."

I knelt down beside him, bringing my face level with his. The fluorescent lights caught the cold, flawless composure in my eyes.

"Of course I knew, Nathan," I said softly. "I’m the one who suggested Officer Vance take your call. I’m the one who set up the fake Swiss account routing number. I wanted to see how long it would take for you to betray every rule, every law, and every safeguard in your desperate attempt to run away from accountability."

Nathan stared at me, the last shred of his arrogant self-image completely obliterated. He wasn't a master strategist. He wasn't a corporate titan. He was a rat in a cage, dancing to a tune played by the very woman he had beaten and mocked.

"You're a monster," Nathan whispered, tears of rage and humiliation streaming down his cheeks.

I stood up slowly, straightening my coat, and looked down at him one last time.

"No, Nathan," I replied quietly. "I am just the mirror you refused to look into for four years."

May you like

My father signaled the marshals with a single nod. They hauled Nathan to his feet, shoving him roughly into the back of the transport van—not a fake escape vehicle, but a permanent, maximum-security transfer unit bound for ADX Florence.

The heavy steel doors slammed shut, locking him away from the world forever.
