Chapter 13 - The Return to New York-13-

Two weeks after the Geneva summit, our private Gulfstream touched down once again at Teterboro Airport.

The autumn chill of New York welcomed us back with crisp, biting winds that swept across the tarmac. But unlike the night Blackthorn Manor was raided, the chill carried no fear, no pain, and no shadows.

A sleek black car waited by the private hangar. Elias and I climbed into the back seat, and the vehicle merged seamlessly into the evening traffic heading toward Manhattan.

"Your foundation office is fully operational," Elias said, handing me an updated status report tablet. "The European branch in Zurich has successfully recovered another thirty million in hidden assets from former Ashford associates who tried to flee jurisdiction."

I scanned the financial figures on the screen, nodding with quiet satisfaction. "Good. Ensure that twenty percent of those recovered funds are immediately funneled into the legal defense and shelter expansion grants for the domestic abuse survivor network."

"Already handled," Elias replied, a subtle smile touching his lips. "You know, Serena... looking at how you’ve restructured Vale Dominion’s priorities over the past year, I think your grandfather would have been profoundly proud."

I looked up from the tablet, meeting my father's eyes. "Grandpa always said that intelligence without purpose is just sophisticated noise."

"And what is your purpose now?" Elias asked gently.

I turned my gaze back toward the window, watching the glowing neon lights of the Manhattan skyline rise up against the night sky—the city where I had been hunted, silenced, and nearly destroyed, and the city that now bowed to the quiet, unyielding architecture of our network.

"To ensure that no woman ever has to wait four years in silence to prove her own strength," I said softly.

When the car pulled up outside our midtown headquarters, the doorman held the glass doors open with a respectful nod. We walked through the lobby, past the polished obsidian reception desk where the name VALE DOMINION gleamed under soft recessed lighting.

As I rode the private elevator up to the sixtieth floor, I didn't think about Nathan Ashford. I didn't think about Celeste Monroe, or the cold marble floor of Blackthorn Manor, or the braided riding whip that had left scars across my flesh.

Those chapters were burned to ash.

When the elevator doors chimed and slid open to reveal my sprawling, quiet office overlooking the city, I walked straight to my desk, sat down in the leather chair, and opened the secure communications terminal.

A new encrypted dossier blinked softly on the screen—a case involving a corrupt corporate syndicate operating in the Pacific Northwest, preying on vulnerable families who believed they had nowhere to turn.

I placed my hand over the sapphire pendant resting against my collarbone, feeling its steady, cool metal beneath my fingertips.

I opened the file.

And in the silence of the Manhattan night, the hunt began all over again.
