Chapter 17 - The Ridge RebellionThe Ridge Rebellion

The trail up to the Rhinebeck Fire Tower was a vertical nightmare of slick clay and shifting shale, the mountain path narrowing until the heavy armored sides of our truck scraped violently against the massive pine trees, sending a shower of bark and freezing pine needles cascading over the windshield.
The Vanguard SUV was relentless, its modern traction-control systems allowing it to slide through the mud with a predatory agility. It pulled up against our rear bumper once more, an operative leaning out of the passenger window with a heavy, thermal-imaging laser designator—a device meant to lock a specialized missile guidance system onto our engine block from an airborne asset.
"They’ve called in a private helicopter from the Vanguard helipad down-river!" Aaron shouted, looking at a localized radar scanner on his wrist-unit. "We have less than four minutes before that bird enters the airspace above the ridge!"
Thomas didn't reply; his jaw was set like iron, his ancient eyes fixed entirely on the narrow clearing ahead. With a final, massive surge of power, the armored truck cleared the tree line, bursting into the wide, rocky plateau that formed the summit of the ridge. In the center of the clearing stood the historic fire tower—a seventy-foot skeleton of rusted iron beams supporting a small, glass-walled observation cabin at the top, reaching high into the raging storm clouds.
Thomas slammed the truck to a halt at the base of the tower structure. "Aaron! Daniel! Go! Take the portable terminal up to the cabin! The iron frame of the tower acts as a natural lightning rod and signal amplifier if you plug directly into the old emergency radio antenna arrays at the top!"
Daniel snatched the portable reader terminal from the console, wrapping it inside his waterproof jacket, while Aaron grabbed his sniper rifle and a heavy-duty battery pack. They threw the armored doors open, lunging into the freezing gale-force winds and driving rain that whipped across the open ridge.
"Elena, stay with Lily!" Daniel yelled through the roar of the storm, his eyes locking onto mine with an unyielding, eternal love. "I’m going to finish this for her!"
They scrambled up the open, iron lattice steps of the tower, their figures silhouetted against the dark sky as they ascended into the teeth of the gale.
Below on the plateau, the remaining Vanguard SUV and the heavy communications van burst out from the trail clearing, their searchlights instantly locking onto the base of the tower. The doors flew open, and six tactical operators stepped out, their automated weapons raised as they advanced through the mud.
But Thomas wasn't finished fighting. He threw the armored truck into low-gear, spinning the massive vehicle in a wide, violent arc that kicked up a massive wall of red mud, slamming the heavy steel flank of his vehicle directly into the front engine block of the communications van with a forging, structural CRUNCH. The impact shattered the van’s steering assembly and sent its massive roof-mounted antenna dish spinning off into the rocky ravine below.

The localized jamming field collapsed instantly.
Up in the glass observation cabin seventy feet above our heads, a brilliant, steady blue light flared to life as Daniel connected the terminal to the old tower antenna. On our dashboard scanner, the progress bar suddenly broke through its freeze, jumping instantly from 92% to 98%... 99%...
