Chapter 10 - The Laboratory MatrixThe Laboratory Matrix

"Arthur," Daniel gasped, stepping in front of me, his body trembling but his posture refusing to break. "It’s over. The state police, the federal cyber units—they know about the server logs. They know you're funnily data to Vanguard."

Arthur let out a soft, melodic laugh, taking a slow sip of his drink. "My dear, naive boy. Do you honestly believe the provincial law enforcement agencies of Arizona dictate the global operations of Vanguard Genetics? The federal injunction wasn't a cover-up, Daniel. It was an alignment. Vanguard provides the synthetic biological foundations for thirty percent of the specialized pharmaceuticals used by the Department of Defense. We are the national security apparatus."

He gestured to the men in the white hazard suits. "The moment you left Arizona, your old diesel truck was flagged by a localized thermal satellite array. We allowed you to enter the house, Daniel. We needed you to bring us the key. You see, when I locked down the sub-basement network, I initiated an automated security cycle that requires a manual biometric confirmation from a direct male descendant of the Whitfield bloodline to permanently authorize the data transfer to our offshore mainframes. I didn't just want the data, Daniel. I needed your physical hand on that terminal to validate the corporate patent rights under the family trust charter."

"I will never touch that terminal, Father," Daniel spat, his eyes burning with absolute defiance.

"You will," Arthur smiled, his voice dropping into a chillingly reasonable purr. He pulled a sleek, silver remote control from his pocket and tapped a button.

A massive flat-screen television mounted on the library wall hissed to life. The screen displayed a live, high-definition camera feed that made my blood entirely turn to ash.

It was the interior of Thomas’s cabin in the Gila River canyon. The kerosene lamps were shattered on the floor, their oil burning in small, controlled pools. Thomas was slumped against the log wall, his face covered in blood, his hands bound with zip-ties. Aaron was on his knees in the center of the room, three armed men in black tactical gear holding automatic weapons to the back of his neck.

And in the corner of the frame, tucked beneath the wooden table, was Lily. She was clutching her generic stuffed bunny to her chest, her small face streaked with tears, her large hazel eyes staring directly into the lens with absolute, paralyzing terror.

May you like

"You have exactly sixty seconds, Daniel," Arthur whispered, his gaze fixed on the screen as a tactical commander in the video feed raised a silenced pistol, aiming it directly at Lily's head. "You will walk down to that basement, you will turn that key, and you will sign the biological transfer authorization form on the master terminal. If you refuse, the commander on the line will terminate the biological resource in the canyon, and Vanguard will simply harvest the cellular tissue from her remains. The choice is entirely yours."

I looked at the screen, my daughter's terrified face burning into my soul. The air in the room seemed to vanish, leaving me suffocated by a choice that wasn't a choice at all. We hadn't broken into the fortress; we had walked directly into the center of a spider’s web that encompassed the entire world.
