PART 4: The Frame-Up and the Unraveling

On Thursday morning, the trap was sprung, but not the one Clara had anticipated.
Clara arrived at the estate at her usual time, but the moment she stepped through the service entrance, she was met by two stern-faced private security guards she had never seen before. Standing behind them, looking triumphantly smug, was Vanessa Holt.
"There she is," Vanessa said, her voice laced with a theatrical, dripping sorrow. "Search her bags immediately."
"What is going on?" Clara demanded, her voice firm despite the sudden spike of adrenaline. "Why are you searching my things?"
"A priceless family heirloom went missing from my vanity drawer last night, Clara," Vanessa said, stepping forward, her arms crossed, her eyes glinting with a vicious delight. "A diamond tennis bracelet worth eighty thousand dollars. You were the only one who cleaned the master suite yesterday afternoon. I’ve already called the police, but I wanted my personal security team to find the stolen property first."
One of the guards ripped Clara’s worn canvas tote bag from her shoulder, turning it upside down over the stainless-steel kitchen island. Out tumbled Rosie’s backup crayons, a half-eaten granola bar, a wallet with thirty-two dollars in it—and a heavy, glittering diamond bracelet that clattered loudly against the metal surface.
Clara gasped, backing away. "No... I didn't take that! I’ve never seen that in my life! You put that in there!"
"Save it for the judge, you pathetic thief," Vanessa sneered, dropping her voice so only Clara could hear. "I told you to get out of my house on Saturday. You should have listened. Now, you’ll be spending the next ten years in a state penitentiary, and your little brat will become a ward of the state. Let's see how much Derek cares about her precious little drawings when her mother is a convicted felon."
The local police arrived within minutes. Despite Clara’s desperate pleas, the evidence was damning. She was handcuffed, her wrists stinging from the cold metal, and led out of the mansion into the back of a police cruiser. As the car pulled away down the long driveway, Clara looked back through the rear window. Vanessa was standing on the grand portico, holding a glass of champagne, a victorious, wicked smile plastered across her face.
Clara spent the next twenty-four hours in a cold, sterile holding cell in downtown Phoenix. She didn't cry. She couldn't afford to lose her mind. She thought of Rosie, who was safely with Mrs. Patterson for now, but if Clara couldn't clear her name, her daughter’s life would be ruined. She prayed that Derek would return early. She prayed that he wasn't as blind as Vanessa thought he was.
On Friday afternoon, the heavy iron door of the visitor's room creaked open. Clara sat at the metal table, expecting to see a public defender. Instead, Derek Whitmore stepped into the room.
He didn't look angry. He looked incredibly pale, his eyes sharp and completely clear. He sat down across from her, placing a leather briefcase on the table.
"Did you do it, Clara?" he asked simply.

"No, Mr. Whitmore. I swear on my mother’s grave and my daughter's life, I have never stolen a single thing from you," Clara said, her voice cracking with raw emotion, her eyes locked onto his. "Miss Holt framed me. She put that bracelet in my bag because she knows what I saw."
"What did you see, Clara?" Derek asked, leaning forward, his voice completely level.
Clara didn't hold back. She told him everything. She told him about the Apex Cybernetics flash drive she found on Saturday. She told him about the phone call she overheard in his study on Wednesday afternoon. She told him about the bankrupt Holt family fortune, the Swiss bank account, and Vanessa’s plan to download the core AI algorithm codes by Friday night.
As Clara spoke, Derek’s face didn't register surprise. Instead, a terrifyingly cold, calculated expression settled over his features. The kind of look that had earned him the reputation of a ruthless tech titan who crushed anyone who dared to cross him.
He popped the latches on his briefcase and pulled out a sleek tablet, turning it toward her. On the screen was a live video feed of his private study back at the estate.
"I didn't go to San Francisco, Clara," Derek whispered softly. "I've been sitting in a hotel room down the street since yesterday morning. I knew Vanessa was hiding something, but I didn't know the extent of it until I checked my network security logs last night. You see... when Rosie gave me that painting on Saturday, I didn't just love it. I noticed where Vanessa’s eyes went when she looked at it. She wasn't just disgusted by a child's art. She was terrified that I was paying attention to something she couldn't control."

He tapped the screen. "Look."
On the live feed, Vanessa was currently inside Derek’s study. She had a high-tech decryption device plugged into his main server tower. Lines of data were transferring onto a glowing silver drive. She was smiling, completely unaware that she was walking directly into a digital slaughterhouse.
