Chapter 15 - The Silence of the Crown

15 - 15
Three days later, the morning papers and financial news networks broke a story that completely eclipsed the collapse of the Kincaid conglomerate.
FUTURISTIC GHOST REDISCOVERED: DISGRACED TYCOON MARCUS VANCE SR. ARRESTED ON 15-YEAR-OLD RICO WARRANTS AFTER FEDERAL RAID ON OFFSHORE SYNDICATE.
The headline was accompanied by a grainy mugshot of Marcus Senior looking haggard, old, and thoroughly defeated as federal marshals escorted him into a district courthouse. The myth of his tragic demise had evaporated into the harsh light of reality, leaving his reputation shredded and his remaining assets seized by federal receivership.
Back in the penthouse atop the Vance Tower, the city stretched out beneath the expansive glass windows, bathed in the warm, golden light of a crisp autumn afternoon.
Sadi sat on the outdoor terrace, wearing a loose white linen shirt and denim shorts, sipping a cup of freshly brewed herbal tea. The city hummed with its usual frantic energy down below, but up here, in the quiet sanctuary above the clouds, there was only peace.
The front doors of the private elevator chimed softly.
Roman walked out onto the terrace, carrying a small, beautifully wrapped velvet box tied with a satin ribbon. He didn't wear his suit jacket today; he wore a simple black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking more like the man she had learned to love in the quiet moments between the storms than the ruthless shadow king of the financial district.
He walked over, set the box down on the marble table in front of her, and pulled out the chair beside her, sitting down to take her hand in his.
“What’s this?” Sadi asked, raising an eyebrow with an amused smile.
“Open it,” Roman replied simply.
Sadi untied the ribbon and lifted the velvet lid. Inside, resting against the dark fabric, sat a pair of rhodium cufflinks—simple, understated, and impeccably crafted. The very same design she had been admiring in the luxury boutique window weeks ago, before Trevor had made the fatal mistake of stepping into her path.
“You bought them,” Sadi murmured, tracing the cool metal with her fingertips.
“I bought the boutique that sold them,” Roman corrected smoothly, a faint smirk playing on his lips. “And I made sure they were the only pair in existence.”
Sadi laughed, a bright, genuine sound that chased away the last lingering shadows of the past. She lifted the cufflinks out of the box and set them down on the table, leaning across to wrap her arms around Roman’s neck, pressing her lips softly against his.
“You didn't have to buy the store, Roman,” she whispered against his mouth.
“Everything I own belongs to you anyway,” Roman replied, his arms tightening around her waist, pulling her close as he looked out over the endless expanse of the city skyline below them.

Down in the streets, people rushed blindly through their busy lives, completely unaware of the invisible web of power, protection, and absolute devotion that held the city together from the shadows. They thought power was loud—that it required shouting, shattering glass, and heavy fists.
They had no idea that real power was entirely silent. It was a bespoke suit stepping quietly off an escalator. It was a platinum wedding band catching the light. And it was a ruthless ghost who had built an entire empire just to make sure his queen would never have to walk in the dirt again.
