Chapter 12 - The Ghost of the Past

12 - 15

The silence that filled the Parisian suite following Miller’s report was absolute, heavy enough to suffocate a fire.

Sadi had stood up from the dining alcove, walking slowly over to stand beside Roman as he stared at the encrypted console display. She didn't need to hear the entire conversation to recognize the shift in the room’s atmosphere. The calm, untouchable billionaire was gone; in his place stood the heir to an underground empire built on blood, loyalty, and deep, dark family secrets.

“Marcus Senior,” Sadi repeated the name quietly, tasting the poison in it. “I thought he died when your father’s estate was divided.”

“So did I,” Roman replied, his voice chillingly low, a muscle ticking violently along his jawline. “The wreckage was recovered. The DNA was matched. Or so the maritime forensic board claimed at the time. If Marcus is still breathing, it means his death was a staged exit—a long-term insurance policy designed to wait out the statute of limitations on our family’s corporate restructuring.”

“Why now?” Sadi asked, her mind racing through the tactical implications. “Why surface just as Julian Kincaid is dismantled and your primary defenses are focused domestically?”

“Because Kincaid wasn't operating alone,” Roman realized, the puzzle pieces snapping together with terrifying clarity in his mind. “Kincaid was a small-time opportunist. He didn't have the sophistication to orchestrate a cross-state relocation for Trevor, nor did he possess the cryptographic knowledge to access elite corporate shell networks without leaving a digital footprint.”

Roman turned to face the security console once more. “Miller, trace the origin point of that server ping. Where did the handshake initiate?”

“Routing through an encrypted satellite relay station based out of Zurich, Switzerland,” Miller’s voice came back through the speaker instantly. “Furthermore, sir… the ping wasn't just an intrusion attempt. It was a file retrieval request. They pulled a specific archival dossier from your father’s vault.”

“Which dossier?” Roman demanded.

“Project Vanguard-Zero,” Miller said grimly. “The foundational asset-transfer agreement signed twenty-five years ago—the document that legally established your family’s absolute monopoly over the shipping lanes and logistics corridors in the tri-state area.”

Roman’s hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. The file contained the master keys to his entire corporate infrastructure—not just Vanguard Holdings, but the shadow network that kept the city running beneath the political surface. If Marcus Senior had possession of that agreement, he possessed the legal leverage to challenge Roman’s legitimacy as sole heir and dismantle the empire from the inside out.

“Pack our bags, Miller,” Roman commanded coldly. “We’re flying back immediately.”

“Sir, the Gulfstream is prepped for immediate departure,” Miller replied. “ETA for your arrival back at the Norfolk tower is six hours.”

Roman severed the audio feed and turned to Sadi. Before he could speak, Sadi reached out, placing her hand firmly against his chest, right over his heart.

“We go together,” Sadi said, her dark eyes flashing with unyielding resolve. “You didn't leave me behind when Kincaid came for us, and I’m not staying behind while your family’s ghosts try to claw their way back from the grave.”

Roman looked down at her, the fierce protectiveness in his chest warring with the instinct to shield her from the coming storm. But looking into her eyes, he saw no fear—only the fierce, unbreakable spirit of a woman who had walked through the fire and learned how to command the flames.

“Alright,” Roman whispered, leaning down to press his forehead against hers. “We go together. Let’s see what the dead have to say.”
