Chapter 13 - The Poison Vault Exposed-13

Margaret staggered backward, her back slamming against the velvet sofa. "Arrest?! On what charges?! This is a family dispute! Gavin gave me that money!"

"You are being arrested under Federal Statute 18 U.S.C. § 1343 for Wire Fraud and Power-of-Attorney Embezzlement," Detective Robert read aloud, his voice echoing through the grand foyer. "Furthermore, you and Paige Vance are charged under State Criminal Code Section 210 for Severe Elder and Dependent Abuse, Systematic Malnutrition, and Deprivation of Medical Care regarding Gwen Vance."

"That pathetic girl?!" Paige screamed, struggling violently against the two officers holding her. "She's a liar! She made it all up! Gavin, tell them! Tell them she's crazy!"

"I don't need to tell them anything, Paige," I said, looking at her with absolute disgust. "Gwen's toxicological blood reports from St. Jude's Private Medical Center are already in the prosecutor's hands. Her blood was saturated with industrial benzene and trichloroethylene."

The moment the word benzene left my mouth, Margaret’s frantic screaming instantly stopped.

Her entire body went rigid. Her face went from red to a ghostly, sick shade of grey. She looked at me, then slowly turned her eyes toward the back hallway where the basement door sat locked at the end of the corridor.

"Benzene...?" Robert repeated, turning to the leader of the FBI Hazmat team. "Agent Miller, execute search warrant B."

"UNDERSTOOD!" the Hazmat lead shouted, signaling to four heavily armed federal agents wearing industrial respirators and protective yellow suits.

The Hazmat team marched down the back hallway, pulled out a heavy hydraulic door-breaching tool, and slammed it into the basement door!

CRACK!

The wooden door splattered into splinters, and the team descended into the dark basement.

Margaret collapsed onto her knees on the marble floor, her silk robe sprawling around her, weeping hysterically. "No... no... please, God, no..."

Less than three minutes later, the radio on the Hazmat lead's vest crackled to life with static.

"Command, this is Hazmat 1. We have located a reinforced, illegal subterranean vault beneath the floorboards. Vault contains approximately forty industrial drums of unsealed pharmaceutical waste, high-potency benzene solvents, three hundred thousand dollars in unrecorded cash, and illegal prescription narcotics. Radiation and chemical leakage levels are dangerously high. Requesting immediate Hazmat containment units and federal bio-forensic teams."

The silence that followed the radio transmission inside the living room was suffocating.

Detective Robert looked down at Margaret with a expression of pure horror and utter revulsion.

"You built an illegal biohazard waste dump beneath your own home?" Robert whispered in disbelief. "You poisoned a young woman sleeping right above it for cash?"

"It wasn't my idea!" Margaret suddenly shrieked, frantically pointing her manicured, shaking finger at her daughter. "It was Paige! Paige set up the contacts in Chicago! She brought the buyers here! I didn't know it was dangerous! I swear to God I didn't know!"

"YOU DISGUSTING OLD WITCH!" Paige screamed back, turning on her mother like a rabid animal, kicking her high heels against the floor. "YOU WERE THE ONE WHO TOOK THE CASH! YOU USED IT TO BUY YOUR DIAMOND NECKLACES AND SILK DRESSES! YOU TOLD ME TO KEEP GWEN IN THE PANTRY SO SHE WOULDN'T SEE THE DROPS!"

They erupted into a vicious, screaming match—mother and daughter tearing each other apart in front of twelve law enforcement officers, exposing every dirty, pathetic, greedy secret they had kept for four long years.

I stood there watching them, feeling no satisfaction, only a deep, profound sense of justice finally being delivered.

"Get them out of my house," I ordered softly.

"With pleasure," Detective Robert said.

The officers dragged Margaret and Paige out through the front doors.

Outside, the quiet suburban street was lined with neighbors who had stepped out onto their lawns to watch the spectacle.

They gasped and pulled out their phones as they saw the town's most pompous, luxury-obsessed socialites—Margaret and Paige Vance—being dragged down their own driveway in handcuffs, screaming, sobbing, and accusing each other of federal crimes, their silk dresses covered in dirt and tears.

As the heavy steel doors of the police vans slammed shut behind them, the red and blue lights flashed across the golden gate one last time before the convoy rolled away, taking the monsters far away from our lives forever.
