Chapter 12 - The Dawn of Reckoning-12

Friday, 8:30 AM.

The morning sun broke through the horizon, casting long, sharp shadows across Birchwood Lane.

Inside the golden house, Margaret and Paige were bustling around the living room like excited children on Christmas morning. Both of them were dressed in high-end designer outfits, their fingers covered in heavy gold rings, their makeup applied to absolute perfection.

"Gavin!" Margaret called out, hammering her manicured nails against my bedroom door upstairs. "Get up! It's eight-thirty! The wire transfer clears in thirty minutes! We need to go to the bank to verify the deposit!"

I opened the bedroom door. I was dressed in a simple dark suit, my leather briefcase held securely in my right hand.

"I'm ready, Mom," I said calmly, stepping past her down the stairs.

Paige was standing near the front door, holding her pickup truck keys, bouncing on her heels with uncontrollable excitement. "I have the dealership on speed dial! Gavin, as soon as the notification pops up on your phone, you give me the green light!"

"Of course, Paige," I said, walking over to the living room window and pulling back the heavy velvet drapes. "Let's wait right here."

8:55 AM.

Margaret sat on the couch, her phone clutched tightly in her hands, her eyes glued to her online banking application, refreshing the screen every five seconds.

"It's almost nine!" Margaret gasped, her voice trembling with manic greed. "Five minutes! Five minutes and we are four hundred thousand dollars richer!"

"Refresh it, Mom! Refresh it!" Paige squealed, leaning over her shoulder.

9:00 AM sharp.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The massive, sudden thundering on the heavy front door shook the entire foyer, causing the crystal chandelier overhead to rattle violently!

Margaret and Paige both jumped in surprise.

"Who on earth is that?!" Margaret snapped, annoyed at the interruption. "Is that the delivery driver with our new couch already?!"

"I'll get it!" Paige said, strutting over to the entryway in her high heels and pulling the grand wooden door open.

She froze dead in her tracks.

Standing on the porch was not a delivery driver.

Detective Robert Vance stood in the center, wearing a sharp grey suit, flanked by six armed Springfield police officers in tactical gear, four county sheriffs, and a team of six federal agents wearing dark jackets with yellow FBI and EPA HAZMAT lettering blazoned across their chests!

Behind them, parked along the quiet suburban street, were four flashing police cruisers, two heavy black federal SUVs, and a massive mobile command trailer!

Paige’s jaw dropped open, her face draining of every drop of color in less than two seconds. "What... what is this?!"

Detective Robert Vance stepped over the threshold, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from his jacket pocket.

"Margaret Vance? Paige Vance?" Robert spoke, his voice booming with cold, absolute authority. "I am Detective Robert Vance with the Financial Crimes Division. I am accompanied by Special Agents from the FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency."

Margaret scrambled off the sofa, her champagne glass slipping from her hand, crashing onto the marble floor, shattering into a hundred pieces.

"Robert?!" Margaret shrieked, her voice high and frantic. "What is the meaning of this?! You're Gavin's cousin! How dare you bring armed men into my home?!"

"This isn't your home, Margaret," I said smoothly, stepping out from the living room, standing right beside Detective Robert.

Margaret blinked in sheer, terrifying confusion, looking back and forth between me and the federal agents. "Gavin... what are you talking about?! Tell them to leave! Our wire transfer is coming! We have four hundred thousand dollars coming!"

"There is no wire transfer, Mom," I revealed, my voice cold, precise, and entirely devoid of emotion. "There was never a four-hundred-thousand-dollar bonus. There was no Toronto corporate board. It was all a lie."

Margaret’s eyes went wide as saucers. "A... a lie?!"

"The contract you signed on Tuesday night wasn't a tax-exempt trust agreement," I continued, pulling out my copy of the notarized documents from my briefcase. "It was an absolute, legally binding surrender of property equity. As of Tuesday evening, I am the sole legal owner of this house, the pickup truck, and all assets associated with 1044 Birchwood Lane. You signed away everything you owned."

"NO!" Paige screamed, sprinting toward me, her hands clawing at the air. "YOU LIED TO US! YOU TRICKED US! MOM, DO SOMETHING!"

"DON'T MOVE!" two armed police officers instantly stepped forward, grabbing Paige’s arms, twisting them behind her back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists!

"GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY DAUGHTER!" Margaret shrieked, her face turning a terrifying, bright shade of crimson. "Gavin, you monster! I am your mother! You can't do this to us! I'll sue you! I'll have you thrown in prison for fraud!"

"You won't be suing anyone, Margaret," Detective Robert interrupted coldly, stepping forward and unfolding the federal arrest warrants. "Because you are currently under arrest."
