Chapter 8 - The Hydraulic Override-8

The tactical operator let out a sharp, guttural curse as Diane’s weight threw him off balance. He stumbled backward against the metal tool chest, his automatic carbine firing a wild, uncontrolled burst into the concrete ceiling that showered the tunnel in a rain of plaster and sparks.
He was a professional, trained to handle high-stress combat variables, but the sheer, unhinged ferocity of a mother protecting her children was something his tactical manuals hadn't prepared him for. He slammed his body weight back against the steel vault door, trying to crush Diane beneath his frame, but she held on with an iron strength, her fingers digging violently into the seams of his ballistic vest.
"Tom! Spin the wheel!" I screamed, pushing my old body up from the damp floor, my knees aching as I lunged toward the diagnostic terminal console.
Tom scrambled out from behind the steel lockers, his boots sliding through the pools of hydraulic fluid leaking from the broken overhead lines. He reached the heavy yellow iron wheel, grabbed the rusted handles with both hands, and threw his entire body weight downward.
The old metal groaned, a terrifying, screeching sound of iron against iron that resonated through the subterranean tunnel. The rust and decades of neglect held the valve tight for a fraction of a second, but Tom let out a raw, desperate roar of exertion, his biceps straining against his flannel shirt until the seal finally broke.
With a loud, violent hiss of high-pressure air, a massive stream of dark red hydraulic fluid blasted out from the pressure relief valves near the circular door frame. The heavy steel locking pins slammed home into their recesses with a deep, hydraulic thud that shook the entire foundation of the maintenance bay.
On the vault monitor, the progress bar for the permanent data purge instantly froze at 14.2%. The screen flashed an angry, blinking crimson text overlay: SYSTEM FAULT. HYDRAULIC LOCK ACTIVE. ADMINISTRATIVE INTERRUPT. DATA RECOVERY SEQUENCE INITIALIZED.
The tactical operator realized with an absolute clarity that his operational window had slammed shut. The server core was locked down, the evidence was preserved, and the data purge was completely irreversible.
With a brutal, calculated movement, he reached over his shoulder, grabbed Diane by her matted hair, and threw her violently across the concrete corridor. She crashed heavily against the metal tool chest, her head slamming against the iron corner before she sloped down to the floor, completely still.
The operator turned his weapon toward Tom, his finger tightening around the trigger guard—
“State Police! Drop the weapon! Hands on your head!”

A blinding cascade of high-intensity white tactical flashlights cut through the smoky tunnel from the main maintenance bay entrance. Detective Miller and a dozen heavily armed SWAT operators flooded the corridor, their laser sights painting bright red dots across the operator’s chest.
The tactical operator froze, his carbine raised for a fraction of a second, evaluating the tactical reality. Slowly, deliberately, he lowered the barrel, unslung the weapon, and let it clatter heavily onto the concrete floorboards, raising his gloved hands into the air as the SWAT units slammed him down onto the ground, securing his wrists in steel cuffs.
