Chapter 17 - The Final Clause-17

"Diane," I said, my voice dropping into a calm, steady cadence as I stepped in front of the legacy mainframe monitor, shielding the glowing coordinates with my old body weight. "You escaped from the medical transit vehicle. The state troopers are tracking your ankle monitor registry right now. There is nowhere left to run."
"The ankle monitor is sitting inside a shipping container heading toward Los Angeles on a cargo train, Mom," Diane said, her voice dropping into a freezing, clinical whisper that sounded completely detached from reality. She didn't look at Tom; her silver compact pistol remained leveled directly at my forehead. "The syndicate’s secondary clean-up crew intercepted my transport van on the highway three hours ago. They gave me a choice. I come here and destroy this data tape... or they execute the secondary clause against Julian and Marcus before the markets open in New York."
"The boys are safe, Diane!" Tom yelled, taking a cautious step forward, his hands raised in the air. "Special Agent Harris secured their apartment! They’re under federal protection at the Oakland field office!"
"The federal protection only covers the domestic field offices, Tom!" Diane shrieked, her manic edge returning like an explosion, the pistol shaking violently in her hand as the tears spilled down her face. "The syndicate didn't target their apartment in Berkeley! They targeted the server networks of the global logistics firm in Seattle where the boys started working last week! They’ve embedded a localized digital bomb into the firm's central framework under Julian’s personal access token! If that transfer hits the public lines... my boys will be arrested for international corporate terrorism before noon!"
My heart missed a beat. The sheer, calculated malice of the Pan-Atlantic board was a multi-headed hydra that reached into every corner of our family’s digital life. They hadn't just used physical violence; they had weaponized the boys' career ambitions, turning their new beginning into a final trap to force our absolute submission.
"The data on this tape can save them, Diane," I said softly, taking a slow step toward her, my hand outstretched. "If we hand these original share certificates to Harris, the FBI can execute an immediate international asset freeze on the syndicate’s master servers in Panama City. We can kill the digital bomb from the root before it ever launches in Seattle."
Diane looked at the spinning magnetic tape reels, then back at my face. Her finger tightened around the trigger guard, her knuckles turning a sharp, bloodless white. "I can’t risk it, Mom. I can't risk my boys' lives on a sixty-year-old concrete time capsule. Step away from the console. I’m shooting the core."
"No, you're not," a sharp, clear voice spoke from the shadows of the utility corridor behind her.
Before Diane could turn her head, Special Agent Harris stepped into the frame, her service weapon raised and steady, her tactical laser sight painting a bright red dot directly on the center of Diane’s chest. Beside her stood Lily, her small hand clutching a portable federal communication radio, her hazel eyes bright with an intelligent, unyielding clarity.

"The Seattle network has been secured, Diane," Agent Harris said, her voice a hard baritone of absolute authority. "Our cyber division intercepted the digital bomb ten minutes ago using the cryptographic keys your son Julian provided from his own terminal. He knew something was wrong, Diane. He didn't trust the syndicate. He called us himself."
Diane’s silver pistol slowly slipped from her frozen fingers, clattering heavily onto the concrete floorboards as she fell to her knees, a guttural sob of pure, unadulterated maternal relief tearing from her throat as Tom stepped forward and secured her wrists in a gentle, protective hold.
