Chapter 13 - THE BARREL OF THE GUN

-13-
The suppression barrel of the automatic pistol seemed to stretch across the room like an endless, black tunnel. The golden light of the master suite reflected off the polished metal, casting a cold, unyielding gleam that contrasted sharply with the suffocating terror gripping the room.
Madeline stood frozen, her body locked in a desperate calculus of survival. She knew she couldn't outrun a bullet. She knew if she lunged for him, Clara would be exposed. Every instinct of her twenty-two years as a mother boiled down to a single, agonizing imperative: keep her daughter alive, no matter the cost.
“Marcus… please,” Madeline pleaded, her voice cracking, stripped of all the ice and authority she had wielded so ruthlessly against Julian. She held up her hands in a placating gesture, taking a slow, trembling half-step forward. “If you have a grievance, it’s with Julian. He is the one who made the deals, who lied, who orchestrated the cover-up. We are victims of his ambition, just like you.”
Marcus let out a dry, humorless scoff, his finger resting lightly against the curved metal of the trigger.
“Victims?” Marcus’s voice rose, vibrating with a lifetime of festering resentment. “You sat in this mansion drinking vintage champagne, wearing million-dollar jewelry, and running elite charities while I grew up in foster homes, dodging abusive caseworkers and working night shifts just to pay for my community college tuition! Julian may have signed the checks, but you—you lived the high life on the blood and bones of our family!”
Clara stepped out from behind Madeline’s protective shield, her voice shaking but surprisingly fierce. “And shooting us is going to fix that, Marcus? You kill us, and you spend the rest of your life running from the FBI, locked in a federal penitentiary! Is that what twenty-two years of waiting was for? Just to throw your life away in a Beverly Hills bedroom?”
Marcus flicked his eyes toward Clara. For a fraction of a second, hesitation flickered across his face—a brief, human crack in the cold facade of vengeance.
“I’m not throwing my life away, little sister,” Marcus murmured, his tone softening just a fraction. “I’m cashing out. Julian left a digital hard drive in the estate safe containing the private encryption keys to four offshore accounts totaling thirty-eight million dollars. With you two out of the picture—and Julian rotting in a federal holding cell—the probate courts will automatically award remaining estate assets to me as the surviving primary heir of record.”
Madeline’s eyes narrowed. The financial trap became instantly clear. It wasn't just about rage or abandonment; it was a cold, calculated execution for thirty-eight million dollars.
“You’ll never get away with it, Marcus,” Madeline warned, her voice hardening back into steel as she measured the distance between them. “The federal marshals know you’re on this property. Agent Marcus Vance—your federal cousin or whatever he is—is already reviewing the case files. They will trace the money the second you try to move it.”
“Agent Vance won't trace anything because the hard drive is already in my pocket, and my private helicopter is waiting on the pad behind the guest house,” Marcus replied smoothly, his finger tightening on the trigger with chilling intent. “And as for you two… well, the official police report will state that a distraught domestic employee and a grief-stricken mother engaged in a tragic murder-suicide after Julian’s arrest. It writes itself.”
Marcus took a step forward, raising the barrel directly toward Madeline’s forehead.
“Say goodbye to the empire, Mother.”
Time seemed to slow down to an agonizing crawl. Madeline saw the slight whitening of Marcus’s knuckle as he began to squeeze the trigger. She didn't flinch. She threw all her weight forward, launching herself directly at the gun barrel, ready to take the bullet so Clara could make it to the door.
CRASH.
The heavy mahogany double doors of the master suite didn't just open—they exploded inward, splintering off their brass hinges with a deafening roar.
Before Marcus could pull the trigger, a barrage of tactical flashbang grenades rolled across the hardwood floor, detonating with blinding, ear-splitting concussive force.
FLASH! BANG!
Marcus screamed, blinded and disoriented, his grip on the pistol loosening as he stumbled backward, clutching his ringing ears.

Through the dense smoke pouring into the room, a squad of tactical federal agents stormed the suite, their assault rifles drawn and roaring with deafening commands:
“FBI! DROP THE WEAPON! DOWN ON THE FLOOR NOW!”
