Chapter 12 - THE THIRD SIBLING

-12-

The words scrawled on the legal parchment seemed to burn right through the paper, echoing with a demonic mockery that paralyzed the room.

“There weren't twins born that night… there were triplets. And the third one is already inside the house.”

Clara dropped the paper as if it were a burning coal. It fluttered down, landing softly on the Persian rug beside her feet. Her breathing turned shallow and rapid, her dark eyes darting frantically toward the heavy double doors of the master suite that led out into the dark, echoing corridors of the sprawling Beverly Hills mansion.

“Triplets?” Clara choked out, her voice pitching upward in sheer panic. “That’s… that’s impossible. Dr. Vance’s files, the birth certificates, the hospital records—everything said twins!”

“Julian is lying,” Madeline said, though her own voice trembled violently, betraying the icy terror gripping her chest. She grabbed Clara by the shoulders, trying to anchor her. “He’s trying to break us. He’s in a federal holding cell, realizing he’s facing twenty years behind bars, and he wants to leave one final, poisonous grenade behind to destroy what’s left of us!”

“Is he?” a voice echoed from the doorway.

The blood instantly drained from both of their faces.

They spun around.

Standing in the open doorway of the master suite was a figure silhouetted against the dark mahogany panels of the hallway. The overhead hallway lights cast long, distorted shadows across his face, but the silhouette was unmistakable.

It was Marcus—the head of estate security who had just delivered the courier envelope three minutes ago.

Except he wasn't holding his encrypted tactical radio anymore. In his right hand, gripped with terrifying, practiced ease, was a heavy, suppressed automatic pistol, pointed directly at Madeline’s chest.

Madeline threw her arms out wide, instinctively shielding Clara behind her. “Marcus! What are you doing? Have you lost your mind? Put that gun down right now!”

The security captain didn't lower the weapon. Instead, a slow, dark, chilling smile spread across his face—a smile that bore a sickening, unmistakable resemblance to Julian’s arrogant smirk, combined with the sharp, predatory eyes of Dr. David Vance.

“Lost my mind, Mrs. Ashford?” Marcus chuckled, his voice dropping the deferential, professional servant tone entirely, replacing it with a smooth, sharp baritone. “On the contrary. For the first time in my life, my mind has never been clearer.”

Clara peered out from behind Madeline’s shoulder, her eyes wide with horror. “Who… who are you? What do you want?”

Marcus shifted his gaze from Madeline to Clara, and for a terrifying second, the family resemblance in the structure of their cheekbones became glaringly, horrifyingly obvious.

“Allow me to introduce myself properly,” Marcus said, taking a slow, measured step into the master suite, clicking the heavy double doors shut behind him with his left foot. “Marcus Vance Ashford. The third sibling. The one Dr. Vance hid away in plain sight while Julian used you two as pawns in his real estate chess game.”

Madeline felt the floor drop out from beneath her. Her knees wobbled, and she had to grip the edge of the vanity table to keep from collapsing.

“Triplets,” Madeline whispered, the horrifying realization crashing over her in a tidal wave. “Dr. Vance… he wasn't just your uncle, Marcus. He was your father, or your guardian, and Julian made a deal with him to split the triad apart.”

“Oh, Julian didn't just split us apart,” Marcus said, his smile vanishing, replaced by a cold, hardened fury. “Julian used me as his personal cleaner for ten years. He hired me as head of security under a falsified background check, knowing damn well who I was, keeping me on a tight leash, paying me hush money while treating me like an indentured servant in my own biological family’s home!”

Marcus raised the suppressed pistol a fraction of an inch, locking his sights dead center on Madeline’s heart.

“Julian thought he was the master puppeteer,” Marcus hissed, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. “He thought he could lock me away, lock Clara away, and keep you blind to the truth forever. But empires don't fall by accident, Mrs. Ashford. They fall from the inside out.”
