The ballroom erupted into a panic of frantic whispers as the guests began to recognize their own corporate logos and hidden transactions scrolling across the monitors.

"Julian," Victoria choked out, grabbing her son’s arm with manic strength. "Call the corporate lawyers. Call the governor. Shut down the power to the house! Do something!"

Julian slowly detached his mother’s hand from his sleeve, looking at the screens, then down at the red marks Victoria had left on Elena's wrist when she snatched the ring. The realization of what his mother truly was finally broke through a lifetime of conditioning.

"There's no one to call, Mom," Julian said, his voice hollow. "Look at the gate."

Through the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the ballroom, the sweeping red and blue lights of federal tactical vehicles began to illuminate the manicured lawns of the Sterling Estate. The heavy iron gates, which had kept the ordinary world away from Victoria’s palace for forty years, were breached in seconds.
