Chapter 7 - The South Side Raid

Word Count: 1052
The industrial expanse of the South Side shipping docks was shrouded in a thick, sulfurous haze rolling off Lake Michigan. Towering crane structures loomed like skeletal giants against the overcast sky, and the rhythmic roar of heavy freight trucks echoed across the cracked asphalt.
A sleek black convoy of Kane Logistics transport vehicles pulled silently up to Warehouse 4B—the central distribution hub identified in Melissa’s vendor audits as the primary transit point for Aegis Transport.
The heavy sliding steel doors of the warehouse were bolted shut from the inside, but the perimeter security lights flickered with an irregular, erratic pulse that signaled active power being drawn from an independent auxiliary generator.
Vincent Kane stepped out of the lead vehicle, his dark overcoat snapping in the cold autumn wind. Behind him, Marco and a dozen elite tactical operatives fanned out with military precision, accompanied by Assistant U.S. Attorney Hayes and two federal marshals holding active search warrants.
“Marco, cut the power grid,” Vincent ordered quietly, his amber eyes locked onto the reinforced entrance doors.
“On it, boss,” Marco muttered, signaling two operatives toward the main electrical transformer box at the side of the building.
Within seconds, a muffled electrical pop echoed through the air, and the humming lights along the warehouse exterior snapped off entirely.
“Federal warrants! Open the doors!” Hayes shouted, stepping forward alongside a federal marshal who raised a heavy hydraulic battering ram.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The heavy steel doors shuddered under the repeated blows of the ram until the industrial deadbolts sheared clean off their tracks with a deafening screech of stressed metal. The doors swung inward, revealing a cavernous, dimly lit interior filled with stacked shipping containers and heavy wooden crates.
“Clear the floor!” Marco barked, leading his tactical team into the warehouse with their weapons raised.
As the operatives swept through the aisles, flashlights cutting through the gloom, they didn't find a standard crew of dockworkers or freight loaders.
Instead, standing in the center of the main sorting bay, surrounded by towering server racks and blinking communication consoles, were four men wearing dark tactical vests emblazoned with an unfamiliar insignia: a stylized silver falcon clutching a ledger book—the unmistakable hallmark of Helvetia Trust’s elite private security detail.
“Intruders! Secure the data drives!” one of the operatives roared, lunging toward a master control terminal with a heavy industrial hammer, preparing to smash the motherboards before federal authorities could seize them.
“Not today,” Marco growled, moving with terrifying speed. He crossed the concrete floor in three massive strides, tackling the operative hard into a stack of empty pallets and pinning him instantly.
The remaining three operatives raised their sidearms, but before they could squeeze a trigger, Vincent stepped into the light. The sheer, overwhelming aura of danger radiating from the underworld boss caused the mercenaries to hesitate for a fraction of a second—a fatal mistake in close-quarters combat.
In a blur of motion, Vincent disarmed the lead gunman with a savage twist of his wrist, slamming the man’s head against a steel server rack and leaving him unconscious on the concrete. The other two dropped their weapons, raising their hands slowly into the air as federal marshals swarmed in behind Vincent, slapping heavy zip-ties around their wrists.
“Secure the servers! Do not let them touch the master drives!” Hayes commanded, waving forensic technicians forward.
Vincent walked slowly over to the glowing master control console. The screens were flashing streams of encrypted data packets, routing directly through an active satellite uplink dish mounted on the warehouse roof.
Marco walked up beside him, wiping a smudge of dust from his vest. “Looks like they were preparing to upload a secondary firmware package to our entire Midwest fleet, boss. If we had waited another twenty-four hours, they would have had remote kill-switch control over every truck Kane Logistics owns.”
“Lindstrom didn’t just want to launder money through Chicago; he wanted a remote stranglehold on our transportation infrastructure,” Vincent said, his jaw tightening into a hard, unyielding line. He reached out and pulled a master diagnostic cable from the primary server port, severing the satellite uplink with a sharp, definitive pull.
Hayes walked over, holding a heavy-duty encrypted flash drive he had just extracted from the main console. “We’ve got the full directory of North American operatives, shell companies, and real estate fronts. This drive contains every name, every account number, and every political payoff Helvetia Trust has executed in the United States over the last five years.”
“Good,” Vincent turned, looking around the sprawling, secured warehouse. “Make sure federal custody takes every single server, hard drive, and scrap of hardware out of this building. I want this facility stripped down to bare concrete.”
As federal technicians began unbolting the massive server racks and loading them into transport vans, Vincent pulled out his phone. He dialed a direct extension that went straight to his executive office at Kane Logistics.
Melissa answered on the second ring. “Vincent? Are you alright? Did you find what you were looking for?”
“We found it, Melissa,” Vincent said, his voice softening slightly as he listened to her voice. “The South Side hub is secure. No more Aegis hardware, no more hidden servers, and no more shadows threatening your family.”
On the other end of the line, Melissa let out a long, shuddering breath of pure relief. “Thank God. Rory is drawing pictures in the daycare center right now, completely safe. Thank you, Vincent.”
“You don't need to thank me, Melissa,” Vincent replied quietly. “Just keep doing what you’re doing. We’re going to make sure nobody ever takes your peace away again.”

He ended the call, slipping his phone back into his coat pocket. The South Side raid was a massive tactical victory, but Vincent knew that a man like Viktor Lindstrom didn't lose his entire North American infrastructure without launching a devastating counter-offensive.
And in the high-stakes world of international finance and underworld cartels, the true war was only just beginning.
