Chapter 10 - The Ultimatum to Zurich

Word Count: 1047

The executive offices of Kane Logistics & Holdings were dead silent, save for the hum of the climate control and the steady, rhythmic tapping of Vincent Kane’s fingers against his mahogany desk.

In the center of the office, sitting on a leather sofa, Rory was peacefully eating a juice box and coloring with her purple crayon while Melissa watched over her with a pale, shaken expression. The attempt to abduct Rory at St. Jude’s Elementary had been neutralized in under sixty seconds by Marco’s proactive security detail, but the emotional aftershocks hung heavy in the air.

Vincent stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the Chicago skyline as dusk began to fall. The matte-black business card Damian DeLuca had once given him in another lifetime felt irrelevant compared to the global war currently parked on his doorstep.

“Marco,” Vincent spoke without turning around.

“Boss?”

“Where is the lead operative we pulled from the school?”

“Secure in our sub-basement holding facility,” Marco reported, standing near the door with his arms crossed. “Refusing to talk. Sticking to the line that he’s an independent contractor working for a shadow firm in Europe.”

“He doesn't need to talk,” Vincent turned around slowly, his amber eyes burning with a cold, relentless fire. “We already know who sent him. Viktor Lindstrom didn't just cross a line by targeting a child; he declared total war.”

Melissa stood up from the sofa, walking over to Vincent’s desk, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed anger. “Vincent... what do we do? If Lindstrom is willing to kidnap Rory to get to you, we can’t just wait for the federal grand jury to indict him in Switzerland. He’ll keep coming.”

“He won't have the chance,” Vincent replied, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp, lethal register. He walked over to his desk, picked up a secure satellite phone, and dialed a private, unlisted direct frequency that bypassed every commercial relay on the planet.

He punched in a twelve-digit override code.

The phone rang twice on the other end of the line before a smooth, unbothered Swiss voice answered:

“Helvetia Trust executive board room. State your authorization.”

“Put Viktor Lindstrom on the line,” Vincent commanded, his voice echoing loudly in the quiet penthouse office. “Tell him it’s Vincent Kane.”

A brief pause of static hissed through the earpiece. Then, the click of a secure transfer, followed by the calm, aristocratic voice of the Swiss billionaire chairman.

“Mr. Kane,” Viktor Lindstrom greeted him smoothly, as if they were discussing a routine business merger over afternoon tea. “I must confess, I was not expecting a call from Chicago this evening. To what do I owe the honor?”

“Cut the diplomatic theater, Lindstrom,” Vincent growled, his grip tightening around the satellite handset. “Your retrieval team at St. Jude’s Elementary School failed. My security detail intercepted them in under a minute.”

A soft, dry chuckle came through the Swiss end of the line. “Ah. A regrettable tactical misunderstanding by independent field contractors. You cannot possibly believe that I authorized an operation against a four-year-old child.”

“I believe that every breath you draw in Zurich right now is living on borrowed time,” Vincent countered, every word dripping with absolute menace. “You tried to touch my family. You tried to kidnap a little girl who draws purple stars on work logs because she doesn't have enough food to eat.”

The aristocratic calm in Lindstrom’s voice vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, calculating edge. “You are an underworld boss from Chicago, Mr. Kane. You rule the docks, the freight hubs, and local restaurants. But you are fighting an economic god. If you push this conflict any further, my syndicate will systematically dismantle your entire corporate empire before you can even blink.”

“Try it,” Vincent challenged softly. “You think your quantum-tunneling servers, your offshore shell companies, and your Swiss bank accounts make you untouchable? Listen to me very carefully, Viktor.”

Vincent leaned over his desk, his amber eyes blazing.

“I am coming for you,” Vincent said, each word hitting the earpiece like a hammer blow. “I am bringing the federal task force, the unedited server ledgers, and every ounce of firepower I own. I am going to tear Helvetia Trust down to its concrete foundation, and I am going to watch you spend the rest of your natural life in a federal cage.”

Lindstrom was silent for several long seconds. When he finally spoke, his voice was a chilling whisper.

“You overestimate your reach, Vincent. Zurich is a long way from Chicago. And in our world... the predators usually eat the wolves.”

Click.

The line went dead.

Vincent lowered the satellite phone slowly to his desk. He looked up and met Melissa’s wide, anxious eyes.

“Is he going to stop?” Melissa whispered.

May you like

“No,” Vincent answered honestly, walking around the desk to stand beside her. “He’s going to double down. But so am I.”

He turned to Marco. “Get our private aviation team on the phone. File an immediate international flight plan to Geneva. We’re taking the fight directly to Zurich.”
